Headset or 5.1 speakers for gaming?

Hiya

I'm looking for opinions here

Currently I use a set of Logitech Z-5500 speakers running on my X-Fi Xtreme music soundcard using the analogue inputs on the Z-5500's for all my audio on my PC. I use the optical in on the speakers for my DVD player which I watch all my movies on.

Recently I have been looking in to buying a decent headset after my parents "borrowed" my cheap crappy headset for msn, skype...etc. specifically I've been looking at the Plantronics Gamecon 1 or the Raptor Gaming H1 headsets. I'm going to get a 3.5mm stereo splitter to split the front channel (green jack) so I can have the heaphones and mic plugged in at the same time as the speakers.

My question is should I move to the headset for gaming and just use the speakers for normal use and movies or just forget it and stay on the 5500's?

i'll second the headphone option. I use full over the ear style, to block out other noise; plus it really enhances game play by letting you hear directional noise as well as minor noises.

check this site; their csr's are excellent. good luck

btw, i have the beyer dynamics dt250's, and love 'em.

edit: but i don't play with microphone so.............

personally I prefer headphones in everything except watching movies in real 5.1, or pretty much anything that would benefit from a subwoofer (stepmania). I have a pair of Grado SR-60s, which are extremely open and don't inhibit much external sound. SR-60s have really good clarity, though, and I'm not too sure about your headset. I think you should try your headset first to see if you like it; then you can decide whether you like the speakers or the headset.

A700s or A900s if you feel like splurging. [entry-level audiophile splurging, anyway :p]

GREAT sound quality, phenomenal placement, and everything else.

Most comfortable pair of headphones I've ever owned [A900s.]
200 @ Audiocubes.

I have the audioFX by edimensional. I'm not sure how the sound quality is, because I don't have anything to compare it to. I like them quite a bit though - the vibration feature is really sweet in games, and has a flip switch on the cord to turn it off when you're doing music/movies. I have noticed that the vibration isn't as powerful as it was out of the box, but it still adds a bass effect that really adds something to nades and gunfire...

They're also cushy and comfortable and block out lots of external noise. Mic gets no complaints from gaming buddies.
