Headset/Mic Problems

So I just got a new headset/mic for playing CS:S. My old puny one puked on me, and so I wanted to do it right this time. Everyone would complain that my voice was really quiet when I spoke in the game, so I thought this would solve my problem.

Well, apparently it didn't.

Still, my teammates complain that my voice is too quiet and hard to understand. Others sound loud and clear. What is the problem?? I'm having a tough time believing it's the mic on this thing, and I think the problem must lie elsewhere.

Here's my thoughts:

I have an MSI nForce4 Platinum SLI Mobo. It has onboard Creative SoundBlaster Live! 24bit Audio. This should be a decent sound card. It produces great sound. The headphones SOUND fabulous. Just the mic transmission sux.

I plug in to the front audio ports on my case that I wired myself. Could these be a problem? I haven't tried the rear audio ports yet, and I will, but this seems somewhat unlikely, too.

Also, I have a 768/128 DSL connection, and I don't get any lag on the servers I frequent. My ping is pretty constantly around 50 to 70 max.

Anybody have any ideas what my problem could be? What steps should I take in dicovering the probelm and fixing it?
 
Check what your mic volume level is. You can also turn on mic boost if necessary.
 
Sorry, I should have put that in my OP, too. I have the in-game mic volume at the max, and I have checked off the "Boost Mic Gain" as well. When I run the mic test, I only get one or two bars max on the volume meter.
 
I noticed your headset itself has a mic volume/mute control. Is it set right?

It'd be worth a shot to try the rear ports just to say you did.

Have you tried using the mic in other games/apps?
 
Yeah, I hadn't tried the rear ports yet because I have this computer desk. With the tower in there like that you have to pull it out in order to access the rear panel, and pulling it out is a b!tch. Other than that, though, the desk is teh awesome sauce. 🙂

I know about the in-line volume adjustment and have those set at max.

The mic was actually louder when plugged in the rear port. I think what i'll do is get a Y-cable for my audio output so that I can just leave the headset plugged in and mute the speakers on their independant volume control when I play CS:S.
