Headset doesn't work with my phone... why?

I have a couple of pretty good headsets: Plantronics M175. It has a 2.5 mm plug.

They work great with my cell phone, a Verizon LG VX4500.

I have a Panasonic 900 MHz Cordless Phone: KX-TC1703B and although headsets for it have 2.5 mm plugs, my Plantronics headset doesn't work with it. I can hear the other party OK, but they can't hear me. Is that because of impedance differences or something like that? This phone has a handset that detaches from the charging cradle, and it has speakerphone and the 2.5 mm plug for a headset. I want to be able to use the headset for those times when I'm having difficulty understanding the other person.

The Panasonic phone's owner's manual says to use "only" one of the following (Panasonic !) headsets:

KX-TCA60 KX-TCA86 KX-TCA88 KX-TCA91 KX-TCA92 KX-TCA98

What is it about those that makes them work? Thanks for any ideas.
