Timid, the kaypro.net redirects you, but the email that was sent out was a link to a form at kaypro.net. If you use that address, you go to the form, otherwise, you're redirected to kaypro.com.

Guys, here's what to do:

Whoever has the e-mail forward it to:
abuse@easyspace.com,sales@easyspace.com

Write in the message that these people are spamming. In that case they will shut down the site. The other option is to contact kaypro.com and inform them of this. They will take the proper action both legally and physically.

Some people just can't be honest. It's a shame.

Just called kaypro.com to let them know...they told me they notified the FBI. They also contacted the host to shut down the site.

Yeah, the right people have been contacted. The best thing for us to do is to let our friends and relatives know. It's yet another lesson in the saga of:

me: "Don't click that"

grandpa: "Hey, I just got a message from some person named Vixen"

me: "Don't click that"

grandpa: "Hey, I clicked it and... hey, what's wrong, all I see are naked people"

me: "Don't click that"

etc, etc. etc. I'm sure you know a few people like this. Nothing wrong with them, just a bit naive.

Just got this email from Chicago GSB:

X-Sender: sstern@gsbpop.uchicago.edu
X-Mailer: QUALCOMM Windows Eudora Version 5.0.2
Date: Mon, 19 Feb 2001 16:04:19 -0600
To:
From: Steven Stern <steven.stern@gsb.uchicago.edu>
Subject: mail allegedly from the GSB

Kaypro.net is NOT registered to Chicago GSB, despite what Network Solutions has in their database. In fact, Kris Cain has no knowledge of this registration. She will be contacting Network Solutions to have her name, address, and number removed from it.

<< Hey, someone send me the link. I got the email and automatically erased it a few days ago. I want to spam the $hit out of them...make it impossible for them to get any informaiton from anyone without a hastle

Spam, spam, spam!!!!
>>

That's not the right way about resolving this issue. You may get yourself deeper than you'd like if you deny them of service (or whatever they're doing). It's not right but fighting back on your own is not the way to go.

I wonder why the site is still up? Maybe the host is unethical also? They are based in Europe though. BTW these guys are storing the info. as e-mails as it is obvious by the way they are submitting the form. They aren't too technical. Proabably some loner who needs something online but can't find the coupons, and figured he'd use someone elses credit card instead. A year in jail, a hefty fine and a whack on the behind will do some good.

The best way to handle this -isn't- to spam them. The best way is to let the authorities do their job. The less stuff going on, the easier to sift through it, imho.

Thanks for the heads up, even though I didn't get this message.

For the doubters,

Here's what i get back from kaypro.com
They use MS IIS/5.0 and Active Server Pages. Go to a nonexistant page and you get the generic IIS 404 page not found error page.

kaypro.net
They have plain old HTML, use virtual hosting, and if you go to their main page use HTML refreshes to send you to kaypro.com. Try going to anything other than form.htm. You get a generic easyspace.com error message.

They use different registrars too. kaypro.com uses networksolutions, the non $7.50 discount registrar.

I just received this e-mail from Kaypro (The REAL Kaypro)

Dear Friends:

We are very grateful for the overwhelming support we have received from you
following the hoax an unknown tried to perpetrate on our company and
customers. We wanted to update you as to the progress and the latest news.

We learned that we are not the only ones who were affected by this hoax. An
article was published on MSNBC regarding this issue. We've included a link
here for you to read. Kaypro is mentioned in the final paragraphs.

MSNBC News Item - 2-20-2001

Other good news, the ISP which hosted the mock site took it down as soon as
we notified them of the situation. Scotland Yard has been in contact with
us, and is in hot pursuit of the culprits. They have assured us they have an
excellent trace on these people, but that's all they would say. We are
hoping to hear more news about this soon.

Some customers have asked us how these people got a hold of the email
addresses. This is a tremendous concern for us also. We are confident that
they did not hack into our database. This is because we've received queries
from people who have never shopped at Kaypro, but who also got that email.
Additionally, many of our steady customers never received it. For this
reason, we believe the data came from an outside source, or sources, and a
relational database technique was used to put it all together.
None-the-less, we aren't taking any chances, and we have increased all of
the security features on our site. We have also tried to imagine every other
possible way they could have gotten this information, and have taken
precautionary measures in all of those areas, just to make sure. In the
end, we are relieved to know that encrypted card information is impossible
for them to get to. That is why they resorted to this tactic.

We would like to invite you to visit our new upgrade of the site. We have
added, as mentioned above, new security features, and also better customer
service features. For one, when your order is shipped now, you will receive
an email telling you it shipped, which will include the tracking number of
the package.

The site also tailors the postage rate to your zip code, which will result
in even lower shipping rates for our customers.

Finally, you will only need to enter your address and shipping information
once, then be able to access it every time you place an order. When you buy
something, it will prompt you to "Create a new account." Just fill in the
shipping and billing information the way you always have, then complete your
order. Next time you come to the site to make a purchase, you'll only need
to enter your email address and a password, and the purchase will be
complete.
As a suggestion to make the password easy to remember, we've designed it to
allow numbers, so just use your phone number as your password, and that will
make it easy to remember in the future.

Again, we thank all of you for the support you have shown us, and, as
always, we will be happy to answer any additional questions or concerns you
have.

We look forward to seeing you at our new site.

Sincerely,

Kaypro Customer Service
