I'm thinking about getting this.

With the CyanogenMod, will that take this up to 2.3? I'm really not too knowledgeable about the whole rooting scene. Is there a good idiot's guide?

You can put 2.3 or Honeycomb on it, but there is no "hardware acceleration" for video from what I read, and only 2.2 is "supported". Supposedly, VS has basically abandoned it as well.

Isn't Tegra 2 really good for video? What does "hardware acceleration" mean?

I played with one prior to getting my Asus transformer and really disliked the screen.

Be advised though that Viewsonic isn't supporting the gTablet on anything newer than 2.2, so the Ginger and Honey ROMs we have now don't have hardware video acceleration, and may never.

In my terms, I believe it just means the ability to watch certain videos at a reasonable rate/speed. Basically makers of ROMs and such don't have full support for the hardware yet...maybe never will. The lack of support from VS is a bit discerning, but then again for a $250 tablet, it's better than buying a Cruz or Pandigital or something. Even an iPad. :awe:

Yeah, I know XDA, but it's so hard to get up to speed. All the various names and updates and all.

Is there a mod that will just make it stock 2.2 with video hardware acceleration?

Get the Tab (is the AT&T deal still alive?) or, if you want 10", spend the extra for a Transformer. The screen makes all the difference here.

Well, the Tegra 2 doesn't support high profile H264 decoding in hardware so playback of Scene MKVs is pretty bad, from what I understand. That's why Boxee Box dropped the Tegra 2 in favor of the Intel CE4100.

I agree with S44 - the problem with the gTablet is the screen. if you are really thinking about buying this, I highly recommend calling up your local Office Depot and seeing if they have them on display and then going and looking at the screen in person. It's a great tablet but the screen is not very good - the viewing angle is small, the colors are muted... I wasn't impressed.

Well, it's after 4 pm EST and the gTablet hasn't sold out, yet. The sprint Samsung tab was sold out in the early afternoon. Maybe it's a sign :hmm:
