Heads up on Sythe Slipstream Fans

Just a heads up people....I recently purchased one of the 1900 rpm scythe 120mm slipstream fans to run in my tuniq tower. I planned to use my trusty old aerogate fan controller to slow it down when I didn't need the extra airflow. What I found was this fan is pretty much uncontrollable without some issues....basically you have no adjustment up until halfway on the knob (runs at the same speed)...which then gets you a horrible squelch....turn it a little farther and the fan pretty much kicks into full speed and the noise stops.

I contacted scythe usa about this problem...A rep replied back that he had did some testing with a 1600rpm version and 2 out of the 3 fans had the same problem. He said he would be getting in touch with the Japan headquarters to further investigate the problem. Right now it looks like these fans do not play with fan controllers very well.

If I'd known this ahead of time I may have went with a slower model and ran it at that speed all the time. Its more of an annoyance than anything, I usually run it at the lowest speed or just flick it all the way to high when gaming. It will be interesting to hear what they come up with.

Seems to me like they work fine...

Why use them with a fan controller when they offer them from 500-1900RPM in 5 different speeds? Makes no sense if you ask me.

If you want performance and quiet from the same fan you get a high speed fan on a controller so you have the option. Why put an accelerator in a car? With that thinking, put a 5hp Briggs and Stratton in your Kia and you'll get back and forth to work at a trusty 3mph, no need for a gas pedal!

Must be one of those sleeve bearing fans that don't play nice with PWM controllers, so get a Rheobus linear controller. Or a Zalman Fanmate 2. Panaflo used to be famous for that.

No, I don't tolerate loud no matter what. I don't want it spinning faster under load, that's why I got rid of the stock cooler on my X1900XT and put a Thermaltake TMG-AT1 on it. Always the same quiet running fan that runs the GPU nice and cool.

On my E6400 I have a XP-90 with a 92mm ADDA fan. The fan is attached to a Zalman RC-56 that limits the fan RPM 24/7 to 1500RPM. Always quiet and never spins up. I think I'll get a few of these fans though. The 800RPM fan sounds like the perfect buy.
