Last Tuesday (2-7-2017) Avast released a new version of Avast AV, ver. 7.1.3394.0. The new version installed OK on my 32 bit XP machines, but on reboot, my 64 bit Win 10 system, it killed almost all functions. I'm glad I follow my own advice and my drive was fully cloned so it was just a minor inconvenience for me.
This discussion thread on Avast forums describes more details about the symptoms in Win Vista, 7 and 8, and various possible causes and fixes. One that relates to my setup is a conflict with Comodo Firewall. However, others report problems with other software.as well, with and without Comodo.
The previous version of Avast AV, ver. 12.3.3154.0 (and updates) had no conflict with Comodo Firewall so I'm laying responsibility for this on Avast. If you're using this combo, the old version will continue to work and use current virus definitions so I recommend staying with your working setup until they resolve the issue.
I've also encountered other recent minor conflicts with Comode firewall. Specifically, updates for Adobe Reader, the Reatek network driver and nVidia video card driver displayed a notice that the installation had failed, but it caused no damage to the system. If you encounter this problem, before retrying to install these drivers:
1. Right click the Comodo icon in the system tray, and click "Exit."
2. Install the update.
3. If the installation requires a reboot, Comodo firewall will be turned on when the system is up. If no reboot required, just restart Comodo firewall using the desktop icon.
