Headphones, What ones to buy for the money I have.

Hi,

I don't think you could go wrong with Sennheiser head phones. I live in a dorm with a roommate and use a pair of HD 280 Pros. They cost me around $100 but you can tell the quality is there.

Yea there for my ipod, and also when my mom gets pissed at me for playing my z-5500 speakers to loud at night.

Here are a few i've seen and liked.

Philips Noise-Canceling Behind-the-Head Headphones with Lightweight Neckband: Best Buy $49.99

Philips Noise-Canceling Folding Headphones with Airplane Adapter Plugs/Carry Pouch: Best Buy $69.99

Sony Wireless 900MHz RF Open-Air Headphones with 3 Transmission Channels - Black/Silver $99.99

Acoustic Research 900MHz Wireless Stereo Headphones $79.99

Bose TriPort Headphones SILVER Silver $149.99

Shure E2c or E3c - $99.99, $179.99 Dell

As gurck asked, what is exactly your budget and what are you using it for? So many choices out there and depending on what you will be using it for and the power source, you'll probably get more sound advice by telling us more details.

I narrowed down a list of them i thought i would like. I'm not real sure when it comes to buying headphones. I used to just buy a 15 pair and go from there. My price range it prolly about $75 or so. Doesn't matter if they're earphones and headphones as long as they're good.

For iPod use, I'd check out the Sony MDR-EX71 if you want ear buds and the Koss PortaPros if you want over the head ones.

I'm a big fan of the MDR-EX51 and MDR-EX70/71s. I know lots of you guys will roll your eyes at the Sony and audio but these are really some good ones with really good reviews.

PortaPros are handsdown best sound for the money. Great value, nothing else can touch it. Kinda ugly though.

Yea you wasn't lying about the Koss being ugly, look like something from about 20 yrs ago. I want something that will have good bass and not get static when i play a song with bass like my ipod ones do. I liked the E2C, are these any good? I wanted the Bose Triport but my mom said she won't spend that much on headphones. If it was up to me i would get the Bose ones that are 300 some dollars. Are the sony earphones comfortable? I know the ones that came with the ipod are very uncomfortable.

The Sony MDR-EX71 comes with 3 different fitting sized molds. I find they're very comfortable but some some people don't like inner canel earphones. They are known to be bassy. If you like bass, these are a good bet. They're much more comfortable than the stock iPod ones. But they are directly compared against the inner canel Appl brand iPod one.

Are Wireless headphone any good? Do over the head type have better sound and bass? I'm trying to pick a pair out but just don't know what to look for!

Of course for $5 you find anything close. I'm looking for a good pair of headphones that will last. I'm willing to spend up to 75 or 80 for headphones. No $5 pair of headphones will compare to an $80 pair. Thanks though

Most Sony and all Bose are garbage, even at higher prices. If you want portable, the ~$30 Sennheiser earbuds are supposed to be pretty solid, but I'd definitely go with the Shures or Etymotics (canalphones). If portability isn't an issue, you'd be better off with some Sennheiser or Grado phones, probably Grado since you'll be using a portable player as a source and they're easier to drive. Grados are open phones though, so while they're not exacly as loud to others as a speaker system with a subwoofer, others will be able to hear what you're listening to and you'll hear outside noise. Grados are typically considered great for aggressive music; rock & metal. The models you want to look at in your price range are the sr60s and the sr80s. If you want isolation, take a look at the Sennheiser hd280s, they're nice phones but might not reach their potential with an iPod powering them. They're closed and (I can attest) have phenomenal isolation. They're nice sounding phones, but bass isn't as punchy as it could be and aggressive music can sound a bit boring through them. As always, head-fi.org is a great headphone resource. Search head-fi for "triport" to see exactly how bad they are 😉 And as far as wireless phones, they can't compare to wired.

HD-280 PROs. Hands down. PERIOD.

Second. I have a set on my computer here at home that I use for gaming and music. AWESOME headphones. I paid around $75 from etronics.com about a year ago.

I wouldn't recomend the MDR-EX71 as I went through two pairs and each time one of the earbuds broke. Maybe I just got unlucky but if you looking for earbuds get them from Etynomic or Shure.

My vote goes to the Sony MDR-V700 headphones. They are professional DJ headphones, but they are really incredible sounding! Only about $100 too.
My friends brother is an audiophile and works for guitar center and they are the head phones he recommends to most everyone.

Sorry, but search around a bit and you'll see that the v600s & 700s are, in the great Sony tradition, crap. On top of making low quality products, Sony's prices are among the highest you'll find, and they practice planned obsolescence. They also have no customer service to speak of. They're up there with AOL in terms of company ethics, they're like a virus. I'd stay away from them at all costs, any quality comparison between their garbage and competition in the same price range will back this position up - this holds true for any electronics, not just headphones.

I have the Bose Triports, and from what I've read they sound better than the $300 Quietcomforts. They're superb headphones in many ways, but they're extremely lacking in build quality. I've already had to RMA them twice due to their industrial designer's incompetence.

The Triports are more of a niche headphone for people who want extremely comfortable headphones with great output in a closed design.

If you can live with an open design, go for some Grado R60s or R80s. They're not very comfortable though, and you can't wear them on transit.

Gurck, you need to get over your bias against Sony, Apple, and Bose. You've been reading too much stuff at head-fi. Read some other reviews and you'll see some positive information regarding both Sony and Bose. Sennheiser and Grado Labs aren't the only two headphone companies on earth that make good products. I find that website and the forum extremely closed-minded and biased.

Cnet and countless other sites have praised the Bose Triport sound output quality. I trust them above some punk kids on the head-fi forums. Not only that, but I own a pair and know for a fact that they are much better overall than my friend's Grado R-60's. He would tell you the same thing. Grados are only good for home use for limited durations. They are uncomfortable, and disturb the people around you. The Triports sound just as good (if not better when it comes to bass) and are more comfortable and offer noise isolation.

Head-fi loves Apple and somewhat likes Sony (the cd3ks especially, and who wouldn't drool over the r10s?), and I couldn't care less what they think of Bose - I've seen Sony in particular for what they are since long before head-fi even existed. Sorry they don't like your headphones and this site's writer doesn't like Bose's business model 😉 As far as the Grados being audible to others, that's the nature of open cans - get closed ones if you want isolation. I never said Senns & Grados were the only good headphones out there, please don't put words in my mouth. They are, however, the most recommended.
