Given my druthers I'd much prefer my 7.1 sound setup but I have small kids so I use headphones a fair amount.
I have some Senn cans and they do not leave me all that wanting but I'd rather have speakers playing.

When playing FPS (my fav) headphones can't be beat for me. I have 5.1 headphones. The sound is 'right there'! Gets my ears hot so while playing not so intense games like wow. I have a pretty small room so I only have 2.1 speakers, I'd like 7.1 though (or 5.1 would be fine).

and lots of ppl on AT will tell you that X-Fi is a rip off as well. Compared to other headphones i've had these 5.1's are great and I can hear the difference in a game of where something is but as I dont have a pair of normal headphones to compare them to directly I guess i'll never know.
We're all entitled to our own opinions, if you do or ever do own a raptor, im sure you'll love it.

i use HD555's when i can't be using speakers. (at night) otherwise i'd prefer the freedom of speakers, where i can just get up and walk away from my desk without the cable connected to my head

HD555's all the way; speakers share too much and the kind of 3D audio precision you can get out of a pair of cans and an X-Fi (5.1 headphones are a scam!) can't be beat.

depends on your speakers.
the freedom and not having something clamped on your head is a good advantage. bass you can feel somewhere other than your ears is also nice.

Headphones - music, "competitive" gaming
Speakers - Movies, gaming in general, podcasts

I try to avoid being tethered to the PC as much as possible. I'm using optical out connected to a Sony 5.1 receiver at the moment. Works great... especially after balancing the speakers. :)
