Well my legendary Koss el-cheapo headphones are giving out after an incredible 8 year lifespan so my search for new headphones is now accelerated. I've often read here and elsewhere that gaming headsets are overpriced and of lower quality than regular headsets.

So I'm looking for a pair of regular headphones and I want to see if Sennheiser, Audio-Technica or Turtle Beach make anything reccomended that's in my price range (about $120). I'm looking for around-the-ear design, it doesn't matter if they're open or closed.

Obviously my main use will be gaming with a music and movies thrown in.

Failing anything good, I might go off and by the CM Storm Sirus headphones as they have actual 5.1 sound or the Corsair HS1.

If you something even better, Sennheiser HD558 or Audio-Technica ATH-M50 are good contenders. Might need some deal hunting to reach your price target.

If you're adventurous, you can also get HD555 and mod it to be like HD595 (youtube clip).

Note that headphone sound quality is very subjective and what sounds good for one person, might sound bad or so-so for another person. Therefore, choosing headphones is a matter of personal preference. I recommend buying from a place with easy refunds.

sony mdr-v6 was recommended to me by a sound engineer, a notch below professional quality in terms of components

I would agree, they are pretty good as I have a set. Mine are usedin mostly music/voice recording, but you can use them for anything really.

There are other Sony models, but most are not as good, some even being more expensive nonetheless.

I would definitely get the mdr-v6. I've got them, and I love them. Sound quality is so good for the price. Crisp and balanced. Plus a lot of professionals tend to use them (well, at least the musicians I listen to).
