To go with my new rig, I want some nice/decent headphones. Let's keep it under $40.

Yeah, Skull Candy is sh!te. ATH-M30 is really a nice choice for the price. I never understood the hype of gaming headphones anyway. Any good headphone should be good for gaming, am I wrong? My rather cheapo V55 does a brilliant job to be honest. But I also wanted to buy the Roccat Kave, wasn't sure whether it would have been VFM or not.

Nice/descent doesn't happen at that price point. I'd suggest that you save up and get something better. Personally I run beyerdynamics dt-990 pro's which I got at amazon for around $150.

Another option you might check is the Panasonic RP-HTF600. I bought them quite a while ago and they've been nice headphones for the price that I paid. I think they're running around $35-40 so they should be a similar value to the Audio Technica M30 that was mentioned above. As far as which is better, that's a call that someone else will have to make. Just thought I'd throw another option out there. :)

SuperLux HD-668B or HD-681. The HD-681 EVO is tuned for higher bass. Generally, SuperLux are known to be bright with overdeveloped treble, but that's adjustable.

Honorable mentions: Koss Porta Pros and Panasonic RP-HTF600.
