I really wish I could try both out and pick one but since that's not possible which one should I go with?

I listen all types of music from hip hop to classical. I might use them for some movie watching as well.

Any suggestions as to which I should go with?

I would make a poll but I rather have reasoning behinds people's choices.

Thanks!

they're both suppose to have relatively hot treble and V shaped sound signatures, the dt990 more so from what I've heard.

and while the d2000 is technically a closed can, they leak sound out almost like an open one.

and the 600ohm dt990 will need amping more than the d2000.

The DT990 will have brighter treble than the D2000 based on everything I've read. I've not personally heard the DT990, but the frequency response measurements for it are pretty weird looking as well. The D2000s extend below 30Hz pretty easily and have a fairly linear, yet slightly bass-tilted frequency response with some small dips in the upper mids/lower treble and peaks in the 7-10KHz range.

Overall, I'd recommend the D2000s. I love mine. They also have a bunch of modding potential that will really make them shine! You can also listen to them on about anything. The DT990 will need a nice amp.

I currently have the SCHIIT Valhalla headphone amp. I'm not really into modding headphones. Is there anything else I should be looking at in that budget?

600 ohms needs amping. If you enjoy sound quality closer to what is actually was recorded, the denon will do that better since it is designed with a more linear response. I went with denon 2000 over grado, senns, and beyer.

I loved my D2000s with the exception of the sometimes sibilant treble. I found that poorer recordings were way too bright and much of my listening is punk rock and metal so that killed them for me. With well produced music they really shined and the low end extension was particularly impressive. I replaced them with Senn HD650s and am very pleased but I still admire some of the qualities of the denons and may give the D5000 a chance next time I get upgraditis.

From what I have read, Beyerdynamic DT880 is more neutral and detailed than the D2000, but some find it boring. I own the DT880s and have only good things to say about them, but have not tried the D2000s. Depending on what kind of sound OP wants they might want to consider the 880s as well.

Thanks guys. Ended up going a different route and got the hd650.

You will not be disappointed. I absolutely love my HD650. I've had them since November and they still make me smile every time I listen to them.

HD650s are my favorite mellow/bass cans, next to the Audeze LCD-2s. In fact, I sold my HD650s after getting the LCD-2s and I miss them sometimes. Not so much because of the sound, but because they were so light and comfortable.
