headphone recommendations for college

My headphones just died : (, I'm not picky, need something that looks good and is very comfortable, maybe/maybe not wear in bed

I have a laptop and desktop, not sure what I'm bringing yet, preferably something somewhat inexpensive b/c they'll probably get beaten up pretty well : P.


looking around 20-75 range...or should i expand my options?

if you want to take your cans to the library, DON'T buy open-air. You need to buy closed, so that the sound won't bother others around you.
 
i was thinking more for dorm room, didn't think about library

so more likely closed?

Watch out, the 580s may need an amp to sound good.

Personally I'd recommend the sennheiser hd-497's or the Grado sr 60's

Both are open air though, and not the best if you don't want others to hear what you're listening to (or don't want to hear other people while your listening 😉 )
 
If you could get a good deal on good wireless headphones it might be something to look at. I tried a pair of Advent Wireless for $100 from BB and they sucked, so a good pair might be a bit too expensive.

Trust me you want closed headphones. I have a pair of beyerdynamics that works great. I don't remember the model number though.
 
I agree with the others on the closed headphone idea. I have Grado SR80's, while they are awesome headphones.. they leak a lot of sound, not a very good idea for college.

Also, check out http://www.head-fi.com/ there are dozens of threads there about the best closed headphones to buy
 
You should get closed-air headphones, even for the dorms cuz when you want to listen to music is EXACTLY when your roommate doesn't want to listen to your music. Senn HD280s are good, but maybe a bit much (nearly $90 on ebay). Amazon just had the Senn 212s for $35 including shipping, etc. I ordered a pair to go along with my Senn 570s (open air, which I use with a headphone amp), and my senn mx500s ear buds to go portably. The ear buds are good, for ear buds...but I want a bit more quality.

Well, I might as well bump up an old thread. I too am looking for $50 headphones. Is the only difference between open and closed interaction with the outside world, both incoming and outgoing? If my listening room (my bedroom) is pretty isolated as it is, I shouldn't worry about it then right?

95% of my listening will be done on my home computer, although on occasion I may use these with a portable cd player or something. My computer is connected to a receiver, and so I will be using the headphone jack from the receiver, so it'll be slightly amped. I do NOT plan on amping these, ever (if I ever come across enough money to blow on a headphone amp, I wll be buying new headphones). So my main focuses are:

Budget
COMFORT - I want to be able to use these for 3+ hours with no problem
SQ while unamped - While I'm somewhat of an audiophile, I do not want these for audiophile purposes. The main focus is comfort.

I want a tight, aggressive sound. For those who are familiar with high-end car audio, I run focal over dynaudio in my car.

I'm thinking about the Grado SR-60s, but I'm curious as to their comfort level. What else in the price range might have a higher degree of comfort?
 
i just want to say i got the hd497's and to quote tony the tiger, they're great!

I didn't know headphones could sound this good : P, coming from sony streetstyle headphones...

I don't see the point in saying they're open or closed...b/c they aren't audible with them off and music going...and with them on I can't hear a damn thing in the outside world 😀.
 
there is nobody to bother me. I'm currently using some sony headphones (in ear), and they are allright and all, I'm actually thinking of saying fuckit and just continuing to use these. The only thing I don't like is that they are a tad too big, so they don't quite fit right. If I push and hold them into my ears, they sound nice, but normally the sound is a little too "airy". Anybody got any ideas on how I can fix this? Would something like the sennheiser mx300s maybe be a little bit smaller so it'd fit in my ear better?
