Heya,

I know this is offtopic. I am not an audiophile, I dont want audiophiles technical descriptions.

my Sennheiser HD580's are on their way out. Deep sounds have cut out of left ear, every 3 months or so the cable to the headphones dies... Im getting annoyed enough with them that I think im just going to get a new pair.

Im looking for something around the same quality/price ($~150), anyone have any ideas? I generally favor the over the head, big earpiece ones, same design as what I have.

These are my current: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16826106303

I would also consider a headphone amp, but I know NOTHING about them.. that I would leave for the audio forum. :)

Any ideas?

Yeah, I'm currently looking in to getting new headphones-- going a little cheaper though. I'm mostly looking at the Sony MDR-V700DJ, which aren't bad, but they're overpriced for the sound quality. However, their folding up is a plus. And the Sennheiser HD-280 which have a little better reviews and are slightly cheaper. I'll prob go for the Sennheisers in the end.

I have the HD-580's and I bet it's not the cable that is the problem.

I tried to find a site with pictures but couldn't so I will try my best to describe how to fix this problem.

You can take the ear pieces off of these headphones and open them up. The black plastic piece around the edges will pop out of each side of the ear piece.

Once they are off and the cable unplugged you need to open up the ear pieces themselves so you can get to where the driver is.

You can pry off the back pretty easily and will see the driver. Gently pry it out (there are some clips).

Be very careful with it. You will see two gold wires which are EXTREMELY thin. DO NOT touch these at all period.

They will go and connect to what looks like a little spring at the bottom.

This is the problem. The spring expands over time when the cable is in and will start making intermittent contact with the cable. You need to use a small flatblade screwdriver and pry the parts of the spring back to normal. The distance between any two pieces of metal on the spring should be pretty similar and you should notice more space between where the plug goes in. Do this carefully and slowly...just work the metal back so it will be a tighter connection.

I've done this with mine once and it worked great.
