i'm going to get a set of headphones for my girlfriend.. i've basically narrowed it down to sennheiser hd495's and grado sr60's... they're 60 and 70 respectively at headroom... comfort is most important, and i'd like to spend around 70, but i'll go as high as 100... i'm also open to other suggestions... i remember we saw these sony ones at good guys, and the ear pieces were covered.. i don't nkwo which model they were, but she liked the comfort... she listens to almost anything, but primarily that teen hip-hop stuff like jay-z and britney and crap liek that.. she also listens to good stuff like creed and five for fighting.. so i guess it'd be nice for the headphones to cover that range of music.. also, does anyone know where i could get headphones? most places don't carry grado's, and headroom is the cheapest i've found... it would also be nice to know why you like the headphones you like... that's basically it... thanks, and sorry for the length.. and remember, comfort is more important than quality

and yes.. i do know that there are other headphone posts out there, so i dont need reminding, and yes, i do know how to use the search button, so no need to explain.. thanks again for everything

I've got a pair of Grado SR60's and they are amazingly good for the price... I have the older model, and they are pretty comfortable, but the newer SR60's are better from what I've heard...

I have the Sony MDR-V6 headphones. I mainly bought them because other people seemed to like them, they don't need an amp, they are comfortable (goes over the entire ear), and they are sealed. Open headphones are supposed to sound better, but they also let in more outside noise as well as leaking out more of whatever you are listing to. Neither of these are a problem if you are alone in a quiet room.

I ordered mine from.

http://store.yahoo.com/millionbuy/snymdrv6.html

I was very happy with the company. Total was 82.32 after shipping.

well yah.. i've read some of those sub $100 headphone threads, and most of posts there are about quality of sound.. which is of course obvious, but in this case comfort is more important than sound... of course good sound is nice, but comfort over sound..

spend the extra 30 bucks and buy the sennheiser 570's. They closed headphones and sound awesome. Buy.com has them for $99, I got mine for 75 on ebay (used)

I agree with Burnt. Those Sennheiser's are INCREDIBLE. Just don't expect them to shake your head with bass. They are so incredibly precise and accurate it gives me chills listening to mine.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention I like them :D

I have Sony MDR-7506's. $100 at the local store, I know I could have gotten them cheaper, but I felt bad because I made them show me lots of different headphones before deciding. Dunno if you can buy them any more or not, but they're amazing. I bought them because my roommates were annoying and I wanted to drown out all the noise they made. These fit the bill perfectly. Crystal clear sound, kill outside noise, and comfortable enough to wear for hours. They sound just fine using the line out from the Sound Blaster Live! Value that I have, no external amp needed. Even though I live by myself now, I'm still glad I have them. I love em.

I personally can't stand phones that cover my ears.....it just feels funny. Gotta go with the buds or plugs IMHO

If you need portability, Grados SR60 are the best for the price.
Otherwise, the various Sennheiser models are your best bet. I personally tried the HD500, HD535, and HD570 (all under $100). I am using the HD535s now because I listen to mostly classical music, and the HD535 (compared to the HD570) has tighter bass and more articulate sound.

However, HD570 would probably be better for what you listen to.

I thought that the HD570's were not closed... and that sound could get out. Is that not the case?

I got a set of Sennheiser wireless headphones with DSP for about $325 cdn. It's a bit out of the price range you gave, but the thing I've learned with using headphones is to make sure that what you're playing will sound good in phones. I play mp3s, and the sound kinda crappy when I use my phones just because they really show the compressed nature of mp3s. On the other hand, there are some things that sound AWESOME with phones.

If you have a new-ish version of Power DVD or WinDVD, make sure you watch a DVD on your computer using your headphones. In the audio tab, make sure "dolby headphone" is checked off. OMFG does this ever sound good. My headphones sound WAAAAAYYY better than any 5.1 system I've ever heard while watching a DVD. And the spatial audio effects are just as good (no overstatement there) as a full 5.1 system.

Here ya go. >>

ooohhhhhhhh.. those sony girls... yah.. that's an amazing pic...

i might be changing my pick to the sony v6's... they look more comfortable... the sennheiser 495's just don't look too comfortable, and she specifically requested "those soft ear thingies" which i take to mean the pad thingies... she definately wouldn't make a fuss over the sound differences of these... she basically wants them to drown out her roommate, and possibly me sometimes... :)

anyway thanks for all the help.. and the pic.. ;) keep them comming (both the pics and suggestions)

Well... let's hope your girlfriend isn't too picky about:

1) Hearing everything that goes on around her while listening
2) Everyone around her listening to what she is hearing

If you ask me, the "closed" type headphones are the way to go. After looking over every pair of affordable headphones on audioreview.com, i ended up getting the SONY MDR-7506. Got them for $92.50, a pretty good deal since most places sell them for well over $100.

if she's listening to it outside of her house... (with walkman/discman/etc) then get closed headphones FOR SURE!!!
open headphones are only meant for home use.

thanks to everyone for your help.. i decided on the sennheisers because they look good.. and in some other pictures they look more comfortable than i originally thought.. she'll only be using them at home, so open ones will be better... i do have to find her an extension cord though.. maybe she'll find one herself... but anyway.. thanks for all your help... it is much appreciated
