Within the next month I'm planing to hop a few flights to San Francisco for GDC. My family is coming along to sightsee while I'm there and I only have 2 pairs of headphones. I'm figuring I'll give the Koss Pro 3aas to my mom, and my dad (not a bigtime music listener) will be able to borrow my Sennheiser HD 200s. This (from what I can figure) is a good time for me to upgrade from the $50-$80 range (Koss Pro 3aa) to the $100-$140 range. I have 3 choices so far

Denon AH-D1100 - $120

Love the look of these, and I hear Denon is great.

Shure SRH440 - $97
http://www.amazon.com/Shure-SRH440-P...6453458&sr=1-2

Love the ability to fold these up and the removable spiral cable (since I will be dragging them all around with me and stuff)

Sennheiser HD 555 - $85
http://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-HD5...6453574&sr=1-2

My friends can't seem to get enough of these. Everyone screams for me to get Sennheisers Looks like I can possibly give these a little upgrade also? Anyways, I don'y like how not portable those look, but I will be using these a lot around the house as well, so... yeah!

Mod to the 595?

What do you guys think? Are there better options? I should also mention I'm intending to buy a DAC/ AMP sometime within' the next few months as well, and I'm tempted to pop $20 on this lil' portable rechargable guy for the trip.

I know that won't be "the best" but people are saying it does make a difference with the MP3 players, so I figure the $22 could be a temporary option for an AMP and something I could just use as a portable amp from then on.

For the price get the senns

Done, as long as there isn't anyone bustin' in here with advice that changes my mind :D. Although I would like to ask... Would the Shure headphones be around the same quality? I love that they fold up small and have the spiral cable. I am kind of leaning toward the Sennheisers, but it would be really nice to have the portability.

Exactly, I prefer closed myself (denon ah-d5000) but I understand why open appeals to people and I do appreciate the open sound with certain genres.

the denons do, the senns have a sort of gril on the ear pieces that lets sound "leak" out giving you the more open sound.

Nope the shures have a closed ear peice as do the denons, the senns have a sort of gril on the ear pieces that lets sound "leak" out giving you the more open sound.

Oh damn, you are right. The back of the Shure's ear piece looked like a grill to me at first glance (dunno why?).

Oh, right. Although I do understand that the 555s both cancel and seal in sound pretty good (for a passive option anyways). My friend said he had his Zune at 80% volume and his wife couldn't hear it... and as a bonus, HE COULDN'T HEAR HIS WIFE! HAHAHAHA... HA...ha... heh... :p

I edited mine cause I thought it was at first and looked back but couldn't decide 100% I would think they are closed, could be wrong though.

I like closed headphones myself.

Ive also found that Senns tend to need more power and dont sound good at all when used on a portable device.

I really don't care what anyone thinks about me paying $200. Let them pay $300 on their iPods and listen through the $5 generic earbuds and hear mushed up 192KB/S garbage they downloaded. I like to hear my music, thank you.

i went for it, don't regret it one bit...

I won't. I'm now paying off a purchase on the Dell Inspiron Duo (Paying back into savings, that is). but what doesn't go to pay myself back is going toward my Bithead :D

I have Sennheiser HD 590 which I like. I made a thread looking for something similar but closed in Audio/Video & Home Theater. I tried some Beyer DT 770 pro 80 ohm ones that I think looked nice and were comfortable enough, but the bass was way too extreme, and midranges not strong enough unamped on my Zune and laptop.

I haven't figured out what else to try, as pretty much every review I read makes it sound like there will be too much bass. They HAVE to be good for playing SC2 in isolation, and there's some annoying heavy bass effects. I'm considering just going for one of the $30 cheapos just because I know they will have small drivers and can't have too much bass :(
