Heading to D.C. for Labor Day weekend. Any suggestions?

Scored a sweet, last minute deal on a hotel and airfare. I will be staying in the Capital Hill area. The Metro is within walking distance of my hotel. Also, I'm going solo, so I can haul ass around town taking in as much as possible.

I'll probably see one of the Jazz/Blues festivals going on and perhaps the National Symphony Concert too. The International Spy Museum looks pretty cool. I also may hit the IMAX there as I have never been to one. And I will try to hit at least 1 Smithsonian building while I'm there.

Any specific monuments/muesums/attractions I shouldn't miss? Any awesome resturants/nightspots I should experience? Any areas I should avoid? Any Metro tips? Any help you guys can give me will be much appreciated. Thanks!

Sadly it is a bad time to come here. The city looks more like an occupied territory than the capital of the US. If you are on Capital Hill skip metro and walk down the mall. There is way too much to do here for 1 weekend so if it were me I would just go with what you already have planned and fill in with what ever catches your eye while walking around.

Yah, I will probably walk the mall on Sunday or Monday morning and hit most of the sights as the day wears on.

I'd also like to see the Georgetown area and Union Station too.

should be good weather here through sat and sun

definitely check out georgetown / M street

also, the spy museum and may i suggest the building museum downtown are pretty good.

also, the new WWII memorial is pretty sweet

I'll look for M street. And yes, I've definitely got the WWII memorial on my list for things to see.

What is the building museum? A history of American architecture?

it's got different displays all the time. it's usually interesting architecture or some kind of theme about an area of dc their redeveloping.

anyway, if you're only here for 2-3 days it's probably not the most exciting thing, but if you're looking for an interesting museum it's a little known one

Don't give anyone any money.....or they will follow you around.
Watch out for flying bullets - Murder capital of the US. More American have died this year in D.C. than have in Iraq.

Just got back from that area.. Stay in the Rouge Hotel!!!! You then are close to the Circle, and Georgetown.. Man Downtown DC was a hell of a lot of fun.

first, don't say "bomb" on the plane. second, don't run really fast towards the white house fence. third, do visit the air and space museam. georgetown is pretty expensive to drink at if you want a cheaper alternative there is a stretch of bars off the red line called..........i can't remember too many drunken nights there. DC is a blast.

Unless he plans on visiting Anacostia he has little chance of intercepting a bullet.

You can't walk in front of the White House, they are busy trying to screw it up so you can never drive there again. As for behind the White House this beautiful scenary awaits:

Then of course there is the wonderful beautification of the Washington Monument taking place as well. Notice they removed all that pesky green grass around it for nice crappy wooden construction walls and dirt.
