Headhunting jobs

If I accept a 6-month contract position from an IT headhunting firm, what are the penalties for quitting mid-way through to accept a permanent full time position? Anyone have any experience with this?

it depends on the contract. my guess is there will be no penalty. the contract is just to protect the employer when they decide they don't want you anymore after six months.

If you are going full-time with the people you are contracting a job with... more than likely that company will be paying a fee to the headhunting firm unless they wait out the six months.

lets say they tell you a contract is for two months at least, but I'm currently on my 4th month..

I get a job offer from a completely different company, they don't have to pay the contracters right? Contracts can't just go on and on as long as they decide after they tell me two months right?

This generally. Only caveat is that you normally can't be hired directly by the company that you're contracting to assuming it's a third party hiring agency type deal.

Most six month IT contracts will not penalize you for leaving early during your six month contract, but the contracting firm often gets a bonus from your employer if you stick around for the entire six months.

That said, you should read the fine print on your contact and see what it says. I wouldn't be so worried about penalties as I would about "non compete" clauses that may limit your ability to get an IT job elsewhere.

My biggest fear about contract work is that a month into a 6-month contract, for example, I'll get a full-time job offer from another company. I don't know if I'd then be held liable for breaking the contract with the third-party consulting firm.

it depends on the contract. i know most that i've been envolved with require that the hiring company pay the headhunting firm a fee. most companies will wait till the end of the contract to hire the person directly therefore avoiding the fee.

accepting a perm position from where? if it's with the company you're being contracted to, then there is generally an administration fee/ finders fee, paid to the headhunters. typically I've seen this figure at around $5000.

Don't forget to negotiate paid sick leave and paid vacation in your contract! Most places will try and stiff you!

this is a good question because i am planning on accepting a contract job through an agency that i really do not want. i also have another position that i interviewed for but they are not done with interviewing other people so they haven't made any decisions yet. if they offer it to me, i definitely want to leave the contract position because this other position is like 1000 times better.

guess i'll have to see what their documentation says.

There is no obligation for you to stay in a contract as long as you provide the notice as specified in the contract. Conversely, if the company lets you go in the middle of a contract, they don't have to pay you for the remainder of the contract.

Generally speaking of course--Read the fine print. Not applicable if you're in the NFL, NBA, NHL, or MLB. 😀

my contract says the employment is "at will" so I can leave for any reason if I want to.

i just read that if i leave in the 1st 15 days, i will only be compensated at minimum wage, not what i was hired at. after that i get the hired wage.

Most contractors do not get paid sick leave or paid vacation... they get paid by the hour no matter what. It might be better to try negotiate a higher hourly wage and/or overtime pay.

Trust me... overtime is where it's at when you're an IT contractor. You won't mind working 60 hour weeks as much when you're pulling in $3,000 a week 🙂
