Headhunter (I think) called me today...

So I'm happy with my current job, but there are issues with job security here that I would like to not deal with. Then yesterday I was called by a headhunter and he offered me an opportunity for another job.

Does anyone have any idea how they got my number? He called my cel phone, and it's (obviously) not listed. Anyone who knows how well I've been doing wouldn't be recommending me for positions in other companies. He said that someone gave him my name, but is that really the case? Does anyone know how these people work? It's not like I got my name printed in the paper every time I got a promotion, and my performance reviews certainly aren't accessible over the internet, so how could he know I've been doing well?

I'm totally confused. Any insight on how they work would be appreciated.

A lot of times it is someone who has given them your name and number. I always talk to them just to hear what they have to offer. But you won't really know much until you submit a resume and have a face to face talk to them. Usually, what the initially contact you about is not what they end up interviewing you for, if you ever interview with them.

Who's Primerica? Who is Citigroup?

Edit: I shouldn't say, "Who is Citigroup?" since I know who they are, but why would they have anything to do with this Primerica group?

I just took a look at their website, and it does look like they own Primerica.

Hmmm, I couldn't hear the name of the company this guy said, but it could have been Primerica. What's wrong with them? What do I need to know about?

Is there ever something that could qualify as a "good job"? Sure you may have an attractive salary, and some benefits, a few weeks off a year but is that really a good trade? Maybe even after working it for a few years you can build up some personal financial security with it. Be weary though, it's a job and as more and more you folks know, jobs evaporate - sometimes suddenly. Read the paper and watch 1500 jobs gone here, 500 jobs gone there. When is your number up?

I myself can't help but wonder if that will happen sometime for me. We just had a guy leave for another "good job" and the person that replaced him, ie doing exactly the same thing he did, is now getting paid about 60% of what the job paid previously. A couple more years of the corporation needing to outpeform the previous years may dictate my demise. I get get cut in favor of a new college grad that is "willing" to work for $30k and I know I'll have a tough time replacing my current salary...they just don't pay like they used to.

So doesn't it make perfect sense to spread your eggs around? Have your job AND one of these "opportunities" that aren't typically well recieved. Everybody is programmed to run from them but when you really look into it, they start making sense. I mean I know nothing of this primerica thing but if it's a way to make some more money then why not? It's not always a rule that it needs to be a job that pays the bills - that view seems to be more and more outdated as we all grow older. Sure we all need a "good job" but don't we also need to have diversity in where our money comes from? Being receptive to an opportunity may well be a smart move...

^^^ I make $55k a year in the Midwest (not NYC, etc.) and I'm 2 years removed from college with only a bachelor's degree: I'm plenty happy with what I'm doing. I doubt he could offer me more.

It sounds like you take dead end jobs and then wait until you hit the end of the road and wonder why there's no pavement...

Indeed. MisterMe, that's a sad way to view jobs. You obviously have not found a job that you actually enjoy. Most mornings I actually enjoy going to work. You should try it some time. Your whole life is better.

Nope sorry, I wouldn't classify my job as being anywhere near a dead end. There is pavement under my feet and maybe if I jut gave in, quit tormenting myself, I'd be completely satisfied. Is it possible you haven't been working long enough to realize there is more to life than having yourself a "good" job. You may eventually find out that anything keeping from doing the things you would rather be doing at any point in time will eventually wear on you. Unless of course you're the boss' wet dream and will forever be completely satified in taking what you're given.

Maybe I'm unusual in my outlook of what a job is. Maybe my preferred line of work is wrong for me? Maybe there is a job out there that I would find more appealing and I couldn't wait to get at it in the morning. But you know what? It would still require me getting up at 5:30 and spending the day doing things that ultimately benefit somebody elses motives. It's a > job < and by definition that means you spend time working for somebody other than yourself - Doing the stuff THEY want you to do. Subject to all their whims and criteria.

This ideal of the "good" job you speak of is elusive and what are the chances I or millions of other people will hit the nail on the head to actually find it? And if we were fortunate engouh to find it, will it stay that way? Will it ever really continue to be perfect over time? Seems like we all settle and compromise ourselves to varying degrees. We come to a point where we lay down and say "well, I guess this is OK". I know I'm not alone in thinking this and I would bet my 401 that the majority of others may feel the same way...

Grow a bit older, start a family you love and then spend enough Sundays that quickly turn into Mondays and maybe you'll see my point of view.
