Headaches from 2 beers?

WTF? I'm not a heavy drinker. Once a month I'll go have a few beers with friends, usually not more than a dozen. Not enough to get drunk.

But the last two times I've been getting splitting headaches from just 2 beers. I can't even finish a third and ended up going home.

Anybody heard of this? I don't get them from hard liquor, just beer.

ialways find it strange when people get headaches WHILE drinking. never hppened to me before, but my roomates g/f gets em too after like 2 drinks (shes asian).

I got this flu bug about a week and a half ago.
For about a week or so after it I havn't been able to drink more than a beer without getting a headache.

That doesn't sound right.. I've never even gotten a headache from drinking beer, and I'm a heavy drinker. See a doctor? Or just stick to liquor.

Thats why I don't drink beer as a rule.
Not ALL beer will do this to me, but MOST will. Micro brews seem to be OK, and some bottled dark beer. But pretty much all "common" beer give me headaches as well. Something they add in the bottling process does it I'm sure.

Hmmm... Definitely something to consider. I usually drink tap, but these last 2 times I was drinking bottles.

It sounds like you might be somewhat allergic to sulfites, remnant yeast, or perhaps something else. Poorly made beers sometimes have excessive amounts of sulfites (as do many wines), and those sensitive often find themselves reacting to them. I'm a little sensitive as well, and I find my whole head will get numb after a few drinks.

Did the beer smell yeasty, like burnt matches, or something else? Sometimes microbrewers try to impart more yeasty characters in their beers, but you might be allergic to that as well. I make beer and wine, and I try to keep my sulfites low for those allergic, but there are still some who react like you have.

Just some things for you to think about.

Yup, sulfates, that's the stuff that does me in.
Also the histamines in red wine.

wtf? you have a 12 pack, and you are drunk.

some beers give me a headache, but its mostly sh!t beer like miller lite or keystone or something. for some reason, old milwaukee red (not the beast or lite) doesnt, tho. just stick to tap if possible, tastes better anyway.

A lot of people think it's histamines, but that might not necessarily be the case. How do you react to white wines? There are sulfites in each obviously, but lower histamine levels in whites. Also, there are substantially lower tannin levels in whites, and there exists research that shows tannin induces serotonin release, and those deficient in the necessary enzymes to synthesize the excess serotonin are often left with headaches.

Anyway, headache or not, I love wine. I have no problems with a properly made wine that keeps the sulfite levels proper (~50ppm or lower usually).

White wine doesn't seem to bother me, as much anyway. Though I don't LIKE it anyway, so have little experience with the results from drinking it.

I get really bad headaches from Sam Adams (shrug). Last night I got a terrible headache from 4 Miller Lites. Got some Molson tonight, time to do a medical study...

I rarely drink beers; but when I do, after 2-3 bottles I'd get headache. And that's my signal of know when to say when.

Edit: 2 glasses of wine would do the same. I don't drink much, so I don't know if it is due to certain kind of beers or not.

lol

But seriously, I have never seen anyone get headaches from drinking while drinking. Do you eat before you drink? Drinking on an empty stomach might do it. I know I get headaches when I'm hungry, possibly due to a low blood sugar level (not certain about that though). Other than that, all the posts suggesting reactions to something in the drink are probably right on.

Not me. I haven't gotten drunk on beer since high school. I'm a lightweight with liquor (3 drinks and I'd better switch to water), but beer never did more than give me a light buzz unless I seriously pounded 6 in 5 minutes.

This last time I ate a big plate of fried zuccini, and had a big lunch about 4 hours before. So I doubt it was lack of food.

I'm going to do some scientifical experimentation and see what beers cause this. Both times, now that I think about it, I was drinking Coronas. Usually I drink Fosters tap but they were out of Fosters on Friday. 🙁
