ATLANTA - The head of the Cartoon Network resigned Friday following a marketing stunt that caused a security scare in Boston.

The announcement about Jim Samples resigning was made in an internal memo sent to Cartoon Network staffers.

In a statement to employees, Samples said he regrets the stir that the stunt caused.

"It's my hope that my decision allows us to put this chapter behind us and get back to our mission of delivering unrivaled original animated entertainment for consumers of all ages," Samples said.

Jack Bauer is on the case!

Maybe instead of resigning he should have flipped the bird... as hard as he ever has.

there you go, cost your parent company $2 million and you get fired

last night was the episode where meatwad lost his brain and then frylock tricked him with a "new" brain and he got really smart

I haven't really been following this story... did they ever say what it was about these devices that made people think they were bombs?

(Other than that I suppose some were planted in places where if they were bombs they would have done significant damage)

The network is doing it just to save face.
Jim Samples will be kept on as a per diem consultant.

They had wires and stuff on them, I guess.

Were they... bomb-like wires?

This is a great way to make sure it stays in the news for a little longer, though.

OK, from that I take it that people didn't actually think those devices were bombs, just that they looked sinister? And perhaps they could be a precursor to bombs? A signal of some sort, like "plant bomb here?"

Here's the thing... this isn't the sort of thing a CEO resigns over. $2 million isn't a lot of money (I'm going with the amount mentioned above), and from a public relations standpoint I think it would have been just as good to fire the people directly involved in the incident. It just doesn't add up, so it makes me wonder if there's anything we don't know about this situation.

If this brings some "quality" programming back to CN great. All they have on is total crap now, with the exception of Family Guy and the few so so anime series they show.

What happened to The Adult Swim from 1999-2003?

what? you don't find Moral Orel, Squidbillies, 12 oz. mouse, tom goes to the Mayor, Boondocks, etc. remotely funny and/or entertaining? But they're so edgy! Like, so funny you won't get it! That's how funny they are.

 RIP Adult Swim

Edit: To make it worse they're giving the guys behind TGTTM more shows. Like they're encouraging them or something

maybe its because i dont live in boston, but i didnt think it was such a big deal... when I looked at pics of the advertising boxes, it DID NOT look at all like a bomb... I think people were just being paranoid and this guy paid the price for it...

Squidbillies and Boondocks are marginally watchable. The rest are so bad I've watched infomercials instead.

That said,

Venture Brothers, Robot Chicken, new ATHF.
