Your focus on that single episode -- it's still an extremely important observation -- demands a discussion at a more general level, given your thread title.
Narcissists can be self-destructive. In the sociopathic dimension, they willfully damage their personal relationships, miss or damage important opportunities in life, and undermine themselves. The myth and fog around Trump ignores that his fortune has hardly grown in real dollar terms since he inherited Fred Trump's business. He almost lost all of that, damaged his credibility with some seven major banks, only to declare himself a "Master of Debt". The Myth hinges on the lazy citizen's reliance on quantitative measures of money as a linear indication of either intelligence or business acumen, but we know Trump has none of either.
I deduce that Trump doesn't seem to really want to be President in various respects, while he struggles to buoy up his polls with any desperate measure to win re-election -- for one reason. That is, the "one" reason is many reasons of the same type.
He knows he's criminally responsible for many, many things. SDNY prosecutors and the State of New York will further unravel his tax fraud and tax evasion -- already evident from the documents that Mary Trump turned over to NYT for their explosive serial story about them. Would he be criminally liable in terms of negligent homicide for 200,000-plus deaths due to COVID? Perhaps the defense would hinge on peripheral uncertainty as to what might have happened if the Obama Pandemic Response Team had not been abolished, or the administration had acted according to information available to it in December 2019. Then, there's a likelihood that enough evidence can be found to prove collusion with the Russians. There's already enough evidence of blackmailing Ukraine to illegally assist with Trump's re-election. There's plenty more.
But, just for the Ukraine frenzy, he has committed one crime to help him avoid Justice for many, many more crimes.
He knows -- if he knows anything when he obviously doesn't know a lot -- that losing the election will increase the chances of his serving hard time -- 99 years in the electric chair.
He's in for a pile of trouble. He may have avoided it if he'd never run for the office to begin with, but his narcissist ego assured that he couldn't help doing it.
So that's why he wants to win a second term, even if he behaves daily as if he almost doesn't want to be President.
And I still get so angry every day, I have to say this. Anybody who continues to support this Arch-Traitor and Criminal doesn't deserve to be a US citizen.
What they deserve -- from me -- is a round-house, back-handed slap in the face.
