Was curious to see if it was worth paying extra to get a tv with wifi capabilities. Wouldn't a blu-ray player achieve any streaming needs?

If I learned anything from TV, you could possibly knock out a GPS satellite and send a housewife careening to her death, but other than that I see your point.

I haven't really shopped for a TV in a long time, isn't wifi basically standard at a certain pricepoint, or is it common for there to be two nearly identical models with one sans wifi for less money?

Blu-ray player, Xbox, PS3... they all can do that stuff.

I bought a TV 3 days ago and it has built in wifi. Unfortunately I didn't have a choice and there wasn't a cheaper version of the TV without it. It's absolutely not needed with so many different devices having that stuff already. The interface on the TV netflix sucks compared to xbox, but it is nice being able to control netflix with the TV remote. Really though, it's not necessary.

Don't make your choice based on wifi if you already have other streaming sources.

All this time and they have yet to introduce a device that can deliver the quality of a simple HTPC for browsing the web. Lots of devices claim to do it and yet they all do it 1/2 assed.

My Samsung has WiFi and I thought it would be the coolest thing. It's not, it's limited and clunky. Next up a real HTPC to hook up to the TV instead of the WiFi.

Is there a TV with Google TV in the market? Simply a Chrome or any other web browser built in? the whole Netflix and Hulu "App" think sucks a$$...

I like to have my components separate, when technology advances I dont have to replace everything all at once.
Separate amp, speakers, entertainment boxes, etc.

What happens when a newer better version of smart TV comes out? Are you gonna buy that one as well? Sell the old TV? You do that twice a year you are gonna get irritated, especially if you have to go down in screen size an inch or two, or switch to a display technology you dont like as well.

I got my mom a Roku LT for 45 dollars. When something better for her comes along it will be much easier and cheaper to swap out than a whole television.
