HDTV's & Standard Def content

I just got a 42" LCD for an early xmas present... and am wondering why people complain about SDTV content. Sure you can see scaling artifacts when you sit like 4 feet away... but if you're sitting at a comfortable distance from the size of you set, even SD looks really good (unless it's a realllllly crappy feed, like a highly compressed DTV/DCable channel).

Some people have valid complaints. Not everyone is being delivered the same SD content by the same provider via the same equipment.

SD cable stations look like ass on my 61" 1080P DLP, but look acceptable on my 42" 720P DLP.

I can't say I've ever looked at SDTV then HDTV and thought they looked even close. I'm guessing you would really think HD-DVD is a waste over standard DVD.

some people just whine. not much worth watching is in sd anymore..and whats left isn't important enough to care about much visually atleast.

Please don't try to infer I'm saying what I'm not. I'm strictly talking about SD content, not comparing SD to HD. There is definitely a night and day difference between SD and HD.

What I'm saying is strictly for SD content, everyone says SD looks like ass plain and simple on a HD set. I was saying that SD content - at least in my opinion looks perfectly fine, comparable to an adequate SD set. You just can't do something stupid and sit right on top of the TV.

SD content doesn't look good on HDTV as the SDTV set it replaced. That's most people's complaint. It's a valid complaint.

I agree with you completely, I think it really depends on the specific type of set you buy. I have an HP 5880 DLP, and HD looks totally awesome, but SD is also very good. So much so that I'm not really in a massive hurry to get an OTA HD signal, or pay DirecTV $12/mo for a few measly channels. FWIW, I also bought (and returned) a Toshiba upconverting DVD player, but did not notice any difference at all between 1080i "upconverted" DVDs and regular 480p from my Pioneer. True HD looks awesome though.

..wondered bout that my self. They don't understand the technology..or limitations of standard def.

SD looks like sh!T on my 46" LCD (Sony XBR2). I can assure you my 1080 content looks a lot better than on most people's sets out there.

I'm sitting like 20 ft away from my set which is way too far for something this small, and I can tell SD looks like sh!t. Don't ever tell me it doesn't matter. Even when I stand 35 ft away in my kitchen I can notice it.

SD looks like ass on a 60" TV from 8 feet out, it just looks like a blurry mess of artifacts. I can even tell 720p feeds from 1080i feeds from that distance on this TV.

..yes. but it's not your tv's fault. It's simply showing you the difference in res. I don't get upset when I see the difference. I understand that standard deff.has limitations and the HDTV is making that apparent.

Why are you watching it from 8 feet away? Is that the TV in your bathroom?

Well it's also my TV's fault. I have an LCD and this particular LCD while it excels in HD, sucks in SD compared to other sets. Furthermore, coming from a regular CRT projection TV, I can deifnitely understand why SD looks like crap.

I am looking forward to a full HD lineup in the future.... but of course that won't be for a while..

a lot of it is the sheer size of the picture. big tvs have never been as popular as they are now, so if you'd never seen SD blown up to such large proportions before it comes as a shock how bad it looks.

..ok.

Do you guys have that many channels in HD over there?

I'll be getting a HD box tomorrow to go with my HD T.V. (Xmas Prezy)

We only get a few channels broadcasted in HD (a small hand full). I'm looking forward to watching Sky sports in HD though 😀

SDTV doesn?t look too bad, but HDTV looks amazing from what i've seen at various stores.

That's about right for that size TV. Maybe a little close, but not excessively so.

True, but lots of SD stuff doesn't look as bad as people are making it out to be. In comparison to HD, no SD will ever look good, but just because it doesn't look as good as the HD doesn't mean it looks bad.

I find that with TWC, there are some SD channels that are MUCH better than others. Not sure if that's TWC's fault, or the actual network.

Um, no.

SD on SDTV : SD on HDTV :: HD on HDTV : SD on SDTV

As much better as HD programming is compared to SD, SD on an HD set is that much worse than on a regular set..generally speaking of course.

I'm perfectly happy with my 56" SD set which won't be as good for some channels, but for most of the things I watch, is better than an HD set.

That's not what he's saying, he's saying SDTV doesn't look that bad so long as you don't have your face pressed up against the TV. And he's right, I think SDTV looks great on a HDTV.

He's not saying that HDTV looks like SDTV, he's saying people should stop bitching about SDTV looking so much worse on HDTV than on a standard television set.

but it is true that SD on a HD set looks horrible. it also depends on the HD set. i had a MAG 32-inch HDTV from staples, and it sucked hardcore in SD. the olevia 232v i ended up keeping isn't too bad on SD material. with that said, my old panasonic tube SDTV beats both of them when watching a SD channel.
