Current idea. 32" and fairly cheap. More TV than I was expecting, but it'll do donkey. It'll do. Any others?

remember though, if you get that JVC one you posted, you need to buy an HD tuner because its only "HD ready" and doesnt have a tuner built in.

costco/sams club have some cheap tvs there if you look hard enough. thats where we got ours.

btw whats your price range?

Well I have mostly been avoiding upgrading my aging TV because TV's are waaaaaay too expensive to be worth it for me. The only reason I want an HDTV is for the PS3 goodness, I don't need nor want a fancy 52 inch monster. I watch all my movies on my computer with a 19" LCD, and it doesn't bother me one bit. For the TV I'd prefer something just a bit bigger though, but doesn't have to be that big. 32" is bigger than what I have already, so it's an upgrade. How much do tuner's usually run?

Since I'm not interested in watching TV in HD, only playing games in HD, do I really need a seperate tuner? I'm reading about this stuff and don't really quite understand how it works, seems like I'd only need the tuner if I were hooking up to HD broadcasts.

Do you have cable or satellite?

If the TV you buy is "HD ready" you'll need either an HD cable/satellite box or an OTA HD tuner (around $200 - $300).

Even if I'm only using it for say an xbox360 or PS3? Wouldn't it simply be a cable from the console to the TV?

Yeah but if you want to watch TV in true HD glory you will need an HD signal which will cost you $$$

cable/satellite = monthly $

OTA tune & antenna = Buy the equipment and no monthly fees.

For just consoles you don't need a tuner, it's only needed to pick up over-the-air TV programming if you don't have cable or satellite.

720p resolution (1280x720) is perfect for consoles, you don't need 1080i since at least xbox360 can't always pump out a good framerate at that resolution.

yea u can just connect direct. but if you want hdtv broadcasts then u gotta get a tuner. over the air is free as said. antennaweb or something is a site that can show if u got reception.

Well I don't really care about HD channels at all, I hardly even watch TV at all. This is my TV now. I don't even have a freakin remote. I'm just thinking I won't be able to enjoy the new consoles as much if I don't get a new TV.

get a cheapo 30" LCD for around $600 -$700. CRTs look great, but unless your commited to your current living arangment for a long time, don't get one. Vizio actually makes some pretty nice looking screens.

Yep, a regular TV is roughly 750x480 (at best) so at 1280x720p you have 50% better vertical resolution (more horizontal but it's widescreen).

At 1920x1080 you'd have 2.5 times the resolution, but like I said at least the Xbox has trouble with framerate at that res and the PS3 probably will too at least for the best games (comparable to Oblivion, which makes a 7900GTX or X1900XTX sweat).

I might move in the fall, but after that I'd be in one place for quite a while. I've moved all my life, I'm ready to stop now. Cheaper matters more to me right now. If I move in the fall, I won't be taking much else with me from this place.

well 1920x1080p has that much res, but u have less visible when interlaced. and yea more dramatic with the wide aspect ratio. progressive is great, i just hate staring at interlaced tvs, its just annoying looking.

Regarding your PM, if you plan on buying an HDTV from Amazon.com definitely get their cc.

The $30 discount, $0 annual fee and triple Amazon points is awesome.
