HDTV TV tuner cards

Does anyone have one or know someone with one of these?

I'd like to know how well they perform. From the reviews I read online, they have good image quality. I am wondering though, will any lower quality video inputs be enhanced? For example, if I were to connect an older video game console to it, would the image quality be more like that of a normal TV? My current TV tuner card is horrible and makes things extremely blurry. I've found out that all TV tuner cards of this type have the same problem.

Any info/experiences you've had would be appreciated, thanks.

HDTV cards are great....

VERY good quality....

I have compared my wintv, divx, dvd, and everything else...and it all is remenicent of crap incomparison to the episode of Leno I watched on a friends AccessDTV card...

Unfortunately, it encryts the data so you can't play it on any card but that one and I don't think export features exist.

Of course, there is another card which is excellent and about $350 but I can't remember the name at the moment. I'll post back when I remember

also....Interent automatically resizes pics that are this big...just place the mouse on the bottom right of the screen and a little "enlarge" icon will apear

Wow, that's really impressive :Q

Do you know if the HDTV cards will upscale the quality from lesser video sources (like a VCR or video game console)?

THe card that you can use in your pc..at least the two best ones are

ACCESS DTV CARD and HiPix

I think they can change formats....

Wow, looks like it can! Now the question left is, how well...

I'll have to shop around to see if anyone carries those (and make sure they have a good return policy too 😉)

from the HiPix DTV-200 specs: <<Used in conjunction with existing graphics card as pass-thru>>

pass-thru=bad in my book

guess it also rules out using it with a DVI LCD monitor

Just use a dual display Vid card...

THe HDTV card has it's own output so direct input to whatever ...monitor....projector....HDTV bigsreen

keep in mind that it only accepts OTA signals...not really a problem if you are in or near a major city and don't care about HBO or showtime HD....

You COULD get a particular HD Diret Tv reciever that allows you to record it

Now the question is, when will my cable provider have HDTV available to me. I currently have Cox and what they call "digital TV" but I don't think it's high definition as the cable box can only output using a composite video port. Anyone else have such a service and can explain exactly what Cox's "digital TV" is about?

I have COMCAST, a digital tuner, S-video I/O and an HDTV.

Those digital cable channels ~DO NOT~ produce HDTV quality images! I'm not even convinced it's 640x480. I know what it is though. A waste of money. I am contemplated getting the dish.

Why would anyone think that digital cable=HDTV ?

It's just a highly compressed mpg2 feed.

Hauppauge makes both a DTV and an HDTV card. Unfortunately, they don't seem to have XP drivers. I have the DTV card in a computer and I can't say I'm terribly impressed. The software is very clunky.

As was mentioned, digital cable is just a highly compressed mpeg2 stream. The same could be said of broadcast dtv or hdtv, but the quality of broadcast seems to be quite a bit better. Mostly because the broadcaster right now has a lot of spectrum and very little resource competition. On digital cable though, they are always trying to squeeze more channels on and to do that they need to compress it more.

They are also completely different signals, so a digital tv tuner card in a PC won't be able to decode digital cable tv. It can only pick up the over-the-air broadcasts, or if you plug cable into it, then it will do the non-digital cable channels.

I don't think that a hdtv tuner card will improve the image quality of console games. IIRC the original PlayStation was only something like 320x240. A TV screen is very forgiving and can make a low-res or highly compressed image look quite nice. A computer monitor is not forgiving. It shows you the true detail that the TV hides. The only way you might get a better image quality is using something like D-Scaler software with your current TV tuner (if it's compatable). D-Scaler has excellent deinterlacing capability that can significantly improve an interlaced NTSC image when viewed on a progressive display like a monitor.

Are there any Tv Tuner cards that can do 480p, as well as regular cable TV? The reason I ask is that I'd like to be able to use my XBox on my monitor, as well as watch TV. Currently, with the video in on my nvidia card, the XBox looks terrible. I tried D-Scaler, but it doesn't work with the nvidia chipset, only connexant (sp?) chipsets it seems. ATI has their TV Wonder tuner, which uses the connexant chipset... I haven't had a chance to try this with XBox, and am not sure it will completely solve the problem... and I wouldn't mind having a tuner card that allows me to use the higher resolutions the XBox is capable of, while still allowing me to watch regular cable TV.

Anybody have any ideas or suggestions?
