hdtv tuner

In that price range I'd recommend the new Fusion 5, paired with a Zenith Silver Sensor antenna for OTA reception (check out AntennaWeb also for information on what channels you should be able to receive, and where the broadcast towers are in relation to where you live). With the Fusion card you'd also get QAM support, in case you wanted to try to get your HDTV locals over cable. 🙂

ota? wtf do i need an antenna for?

OTA - "over the air" - just refers to broadcasts that you can pick up with an antenna.

Edit: What channels were you hoping to receive digitally/in HD?

Edit 2: (In reference to the part I bolded) - the ATI card comes with an antenna, so you'd need one either way, unless you wanted to try to get the unencrypted channels over cable - which can't be done with the ATI card. 😉

just a heads up, a lot of digital/HD channels over broadband cable can't be watched with an HD tuner card because of some protection.

but the HD OTA broadcasts supposedly have better quality than the cable broadcasts

I like the ATI HDTV Wonder quite a bit.

I think your main concern would be having compatible hardware and drivers (probably safetest to have a Built By ATI video card}

I am well aware of that, that's why I specified "unencrypted". 😉

And yes, sometimes the OTA broadcasts have higher bitrates than the ones on cable. However it's nice to have the option of getting the signal either way, especially if you live in an area where your OTA reception isn't so great.
