I currently have Comcast standard cable (45/month for local channels + espn, mtv, cnn etc etc.)
I also just got this TV here. My understanding is that it has a built in HD tuner so I can pick up HD signals already.
When the BB guys came and delivered my TV, they did a channel detection, and we picked up the usual 77 analog channels lightening fast. However, it took a while to pick up the close to 200 digital channels.
Anyways, so now when I watch TV, there's your regular CBS (5) and FOX (2) etc etc which looks terrible on a 1080p LCD screen. At the same time there's CBS (5.1) FOX (2.1), etc, and these are the digital channels according to the BB guys. It says 1080i on top of my screen when I switch to 5.1, and when I watch 2.1 (FOX) it says 720p. So I'm getting HDTV for my basic local channels right? Since I DO NOT have the Comcast box, and only standard cable (no digital, no hdtv), I'm relying on my TV to decode the channels, and so my channel #s definitely don't follow Comcast's digital lineup (like ABC digital for me is 117.1 instead of the analog 7).
Am I correct in saying that I DO NOT need the Comcast box to get HDTV because my TV has an HDTV tuner inside? I DO understand that I do not get ESPN HD and Discovery HD, and a lot of others simply because my subscription does not have "Digital Classic."
Am I also correct in saying that the Comcast HDTV service just provides you a box (which is a tuner) and then places channels like Fox, CBS, ABC on their default channel #s (for me that would be (700s) instead of relying on my TV to give ghetto #s like 117.1, etc etc.
Thus I should only upgrade to Digital Classic and get the HDTV box if I want additional channels right? I should be able to watch HDTV?
