Were shows ever filmed in High Def but with a 4:3 aspect ratio?

i don't think so...

i think one of the defining characteritstics of true HD material is that it was shot in 16:9

it'd be pointless to thought, I hate 4:3 now, especially after buying a 16:9 tv.

I was under the impression that it wasn't, but some people are telling me there was a transition period between 4:3, HDTV, and 16:9....personally I think they're smoking crack, so I figure I'd come here to you tech savvy people 😉:beer:

HD is either 1280 x 720 or 1920 x 1080. If that were shrunk to 4:3, everything would look horribly thin... I think.

Sometimes old movies can be transfered from film to HD but they will still be in the 4:3 aspect ratio.

yup, hd was wide from the start. only possible 4:3 is the very very old film transfers to hd.

That said, alot of the old TV shows were shot on film. So Star Trek TOS should look amazing in HD, while TNG was shot on SD Video, and won't benefit from it.

I could've sworn I watched the MLB playoffs in HD... But not in widescreen. Same with Trading Spaces this afternoon. There are plenty of HD programs not in widescreen.
(Or am I technically mistaken?)

you might be mistaken.....I think you were probably watching an HDTV station, that wasn't broadcasting in HD...probably 480p digital.

does anyone know if the Seinfeld series was shot in Film? I know the DVD box set says digitally remastered in HD, but the DVD's themselves are 4:3 and obviously only 480p.

Your mistaken, unless you have a TV that allows you to change aspects of even HD shows, but then it would have just been a smashed picture.

HD is 16:9. For many sports feeds, they use the 4:3 analog feed and add black bars to make it a 16:9.

HD can be either 16x9 or 4x3
Aspect ratio is independent of resolution.

That said, Almost all HD programming is produced in widescreen (16x9, 14x9 etc...)
But, 4x3 material can be produced and be within the ATSC DTV standard.

i dunno, but hbo tv shows certainly are. i have my doubts about seinfeld, it was done when most shows were tapehttp://www.imdb.com/title/tt0098904/technical but i guess i'm wrong. the seinfeld transfer does look better then stuff like stng

Apparently, there's an HD channel out there (on Voom?) that shows high definition transfers of old shows like Bewitched.
