HDTV Q?

No, HDTV ready means the set is capable of HDTV display but only when attached to a HDTV box. - Normally, but who knows what marketing descriptions different vendors may use.

"HDTV compatible" and "HDTV Ready" are the same thing. Both will need a Set Top Box (STB) to decode HDTV signals.

Dern, so what keyword should I look for when buying a HDTV box built-in TV?

I wouldn't do that. I'd buy an HDTV ready TV and a seperate STB.

Besides the fact that tuners are basically useless in TVs these days (everyone is using a cable box or sat box) the standards for HDTV are still fluid, and you don;t want to be stuck with outdated technology.

hmm...so when will we have full blown HDTV broadcasts? Since there aren't any standards, will the HDTV ready TV I buy today work with future HDTV standards?

Yes. The resolution standards are pretty much set. It's the decoding and theft protection standards that are still fluid. Buying a TV capable of 1080i, 720p and 480p is a good bet right now. buying a built in HDTV decoder that cannot be changed is not a good bet.

I don't think you want it built-in as the standards haven't solidified yet.

actually there is big news in hdtv...85% of the providers have agreed on a standard, (as of last month), which means there will be a standard, its just not out in circulation yet. If you want to get a set with all in one, RCA makes a model with a satelite tuner built in, problem is...what if you want to upgrade later??? wanting it all in one sounds nice, but think about it this...would you want a hard drive/ mobo/ video card all in one....same theory

unless you live all the way in the boondocks, don't worry about having it built in. A lot of new cable boxes have HDTV decoders built right in, usually at no extra charge to the customer. By an external decoder or one with the decoder built in is a waste of money.
