I currently have my ps3 connected to my 24" 1080p BenQ monitor and that's fine, but I've been looking at 42" lcd televisions which seem to cost a bit over $1000.

I'm curious to know how much larger a tv I could likely afford for that price 6 months from now or 1 year from now (or how much I could save) - I don't know anything about tv pricing or the trends, heck I don't even have a tv at the moment. Hopefully someone can add some insight.

It depends on the tech. You can get massive DLP sets for pennies compared to some LCD/Plasma sets. I saw some ridiculously sized Mitsubishi at BB yesterday, 70" plus, and it was less than $3G if I remember correctly. You can find 50" LCDs in the same price range...

My rule of thumb: every year, you can get 2" more of screen size for free. So, give it two or three years, and you'll see 46"-47" TVs at the same price range as 40"-42" ones are now.

That's Erwos' Law!

if you have the room for it you could go with a projector (but the cheapest 1080p ones are still a little over $2000) you might see 1080p around $1500 within 6months or so, and if you have good light control you could do a 100" screen.

I'm definitely interested by projectors, probably not for now but in a few years. I've heard that the quality really varies though, and the price certainly does since you can put down 2000 as mentioned or 10+ times that much (the one in anand's theatre blog cost 7 or 8 thousand I think). I would need to do a lot more research before buying a projector and I'm not sure that a low end 1080p model would be worth buying.

Paid $4,200 for a 720P Panasonic 50" plasma 2.5 years ago.

I believe you can pick up a 50" Panasonic for $1,500 or cheaper today, easily!
