I have time warner digital cable in NYC, and I know they offer free hdtv receiver. Is it possible to get it and view hdtv signals on my dell 2001fp? I don't know what outputs the receiver has, but 2001fp supports composite, dvi and vga inputs. I can always use the dvi to vga cable.

the box should have an dvi output, but as it is my understanding, and I could be wrong, dvi for tv's is not the same as dvi for computers, something about dvi-d or something

So you don't have the service now? Why not buy an HDTV (Fusion or HDTV Wonder, etc) card so you can utilize DVR capabilities? You'll be paying XX a month anyway, might as well buy something that's yours in the long run.

Most set top HD rentals are dirt cheap. Mine is $5.99 a month.

It would take a long time to put even a dent in the cost of a purchased tuner.

time warner digital cable offers hdtv channels for free. You get the usual suspects, hbo, fox, pbs...etc. I don't have a hdtv, so I just want to see if I can get the high res signal on my lcd.

I'm more than aware of how much STBs are, but I guess if he's starting with nothing, 6*12 is already 72 bucks...the HDTV Wonder is no more than $200, with other cards being around that range as well.

To each his own, I suppose...I would save up some money and buy an actual HDTV first, instead of watching HD on a 20" LCD.

i'm guessing if you down convert the signal you can watch hdtv on your 2001fp.
hdtv runs at 1920x1080 and the 2001fp runs at 1600x1200

Dude that is the current max of HDTV. No one is broadcasting that.

Most companies are broadcasting 1280x720p and that will easily fit on the 2001fp BUT the resolotion is higher and will 'stretch' the source image and make it not look as good. It is designed for a computer monitor and doesn't have the extra decoding powers that a real TV or LCD TV that is HDTV compatible has that would make HDTV better on it.
