HDTV in Europe?

HDTV technology amazes me, standard broadcast is far worse, but I live in Continental Europe, so I can't watch any HDTV channels.
As far as I know, there is one HDTV channel (digital satellite), but it's encrypted. When do you think HDTV will hit Europe? Does anyone have some information regarding the matter at hand?

our digtal tv standards do allow for it, but america is driven by media, whereas we are driven by book readers in government...

no idea. I find europe stupid for that. America already has all those HDTV stuff and we? Pah, there's 1 channel I think you can get via Satellite and it's not always on. Bleh.

I'd rather have the cell phones. Maybe thats just cuzz my present poor college student status can't afford hdtv yet.

I'd rather have the cell phones. Maybe thats just cuzz my present poor college student status can't afford hdtv yet.
