HDTV: if 720p why not 1080p and not just 1080i?

I've been searching HDTV equipment specs and I've wondered about such things..

And also, what is the true resolution of a DVD and why do many TV's that claim to support 720p have different numbers of scan lines? How does all this compare to computer monitor resolution?
