Currently i have a 46" Samsung DLP that is about 3 years old. I was thinking about upgrading to a 1080P HD set and i think both of these look like good choices. I just cant decide if id rahter have 60" Sony RPTV or a 50" Panasonic Plasma in the $2000'ish price range.

Anyone own either of these 2 models below? I dont think space is an issue although it would be cool to be able to put one on the wall.

Panasonic TH-50PZ77U
or
Sony KDS-60A3000

Any suggestions or alternatives in that price/size range would be welcomed.

Thanks

Purely as a matter of opinion, I would always get a plasma over a rear projection. Colour and brightness doesnt compare....

I'll put my RPTV against a plasma anyday and come out ahead in the color and contrast department.

OP - how far away do you sit? That above all else determines what you should be looking at.

I'm still happy with the 50" Samsung 1080p DLP I bought a bit over a year ago, and the 50" is now under $1,300. So you could always go DLP again and spend the savings on something else.

soul, go to avsforums and you'll find many a vastly experienced with home theater member who wouldn't part with their rptv for a plasma or lcd for nothing..lots of good information why to be had there. me? i have a panny 53 inch rptv, a 50 inch samsung plasma and i bought a 46 inch sony lcd for my kids. at first, i found the plasma and lcds to be so vivid and bright and thought cool, but much like a receiver with all kinds of jingle and jangle that impresses at first, got fatigued watching the plasma and lcd. to each their own:)

Not really. I see my role as bringing truth and justice to the AT AV forum. A spiderman if you will. These are engraved upon my suit:

1) champion high quality audio and video
2) strike down misinformation from personal experience that which those have 'read' or 'heard' or any other such bullshit
3) try to assist others to achieve audio and video nirvana, regardless of what others tell them on message boards, from salesmen, from "that guy at work".

Yes. I will continue my mission for all that is right with audio and video. And strike down with great vengence all those that wish to believe that a 42" display is just fine at a ten foot viewing distance.

The year is 2008, the year of 1080 high definition television.

-edit-
I just reread you post and now I understand. You're an inexperienced salesman, trained to push what you push. I don't put much trust in salesmen. I will put my trust in personal experience.

Spidey....seriously, how can you rate a RPTV over a plasma....I am a member at AVS (new yes), however, I do have a DLP projector also.

In the showrooms (I'm an IT Consultant, not a TV saleman..hehe), the RPTV ALWAYS look dull, dark and lifeless......Even my plasma has more brightness, contrast & jumps out of the screen compared to these RPTV when @ 50%.

So, what am I missing Spidey?

Hi I'm new to this fourm I have a question

I just returned (3) kdl40xbr4 tv's because for the most part they look great on the sales floor but when you get them home they stink with motion blur, flickering, etc.

I was in the market for a panasonic pz277u But no one had them. I was also interested in the pz700u but was afraid of the glare thing. To be honest the 700u looked better than the 77u.

I went to BB and I brought a pioneer pdp-4280hd. The colors looked great compaired to other plasmas, (the Colors are almost up there with the sony which was what sold me the set) the blacks are wonderful, It has ton of connections But I always question myself. It's only 720P, I don't have the room for a 52 or 54 inch set.

Am I missing anything by not having the 1080P. It's a shame because on one hand I felt a great upgrade but on this spec I feel I downgrated. Yet the panasonic colors looked a little washed out in the store. So if there is anyone who can settle my mind with the truth I would be most apprecative.
