I have the progessive scan on. Looks good but there are still the black bars. I thought the widescreen tv would eliminate that? I am using HDMI and have 16x9 set.

any one have any suggesions?

What YetioDoom said, and you also need to change your dvd player to widescreen mode, or else it will still assume you have a 4:3 TV.

Are there bars all around or just top and bottom or just right and left sides?

Do the people look normal or stretched/squished?

Your TV is a 1.85:1 aspect ratio. So, if you are watching a movie filmed in that AR, then there will be no black bars.

However, if you movie of choice is a 2.35:1 AR, then you will have black bars on the top and bottom.

Don't worry... I had the same exact thoughts when I first got my HDTV. :)

Yep. Could still possibly be your DVD player assuming you have a 4:3 or something.

I find it kinda irritating that they couldn't come up with a true widescreen standard. Make all TVs be 2.1:1 instead of 1.85:1 or 2.35:1 or something. Its kinda annoying when you buy a widescreen TV (or monitor) and get stuck with black bars because someone had to do 2.35 instead of the 16x9.

Poor rant, but oh well. :)

If you are talking about black bars above and below your picture, that is normal, even with a widescreen tv.

Sounds like you are watching a movie wider than 1.85:1. A widescreen set will not get rid of all black bars. You could zoom in on the movie to remove the bars, but you will be missing part of the picture.

You will have black or gray bars on the side when viewing 4:3 stuff as well. You can stretch it, but it will distort the picture some. Again some TVs are better than others at this.

With most DVD players & some cable/sat converters you can also use a feature called "stretch" to fill the screen & eliminate the black bars, but you will also lose some of the picture off the edges of the screen & some sharpness as well.

You can always use a projector to get rid of all the black bars (custom cut 2.35:1 screen!)

Let see how to put this.
Look on the back of your movies you buy.
As long as your dvd player is set to widescreen then the problem you have is because of two different widescreen formats.
Animorphic widescreen (SP Its late, im tired, and lazy) This is basicly P&N but streched in a way to fit a widescreen tv fully if dvd player is set to widescreen.

If the movies say's it is in the true format as presented in the theater then your going to get the full widescreen theatrical proportion which will end up having the black bars on the top and bottom.

I prefer these because you get the move they way it was shown in the theater with nothing cut off from the top or sides to fit your tv.

As always I suck sometime trying to explain something so if you understand what I am writing and can put it in a way that is better to understand please feel free.

But if it says Animorphic what ever on the back and your one that wants to see everything you saw like it was at the theater then your out of luck. If it doesnt say that then your just going to have to deal with the black bars but get the full picture as presented at the theater.

What I meant is why didn't they come up with that before they started the two different widescreen formats? Make them all be the same ratio and then make TVs retain that ratio. As for standard TV, well it'll look bad on any widescreen TV, so might as well get a single aspect ratio, that way you don't have to put up with even more letterboxing from some movies. Besides, who cares about SD now, its all about the HD.

naw, because epic pictures need ultra wide, and other films like comedy work better in a cozier aspect ratio

Personally, I'd be happier if everything was shot in 16x9 AR.

You don't get it, do you.
I totally get it. Notice he said his tv was 16:9.

No you don't. You don't seem to understand that some movies are still going to have black bars.

LOL, you are the confused one. He KNOWS that, but a movie in the 16:9 aspect ratio WONT have black bars. THAT'S what he was trying to say.

you are seeing the movie the way it was intended to be

OAR is the only option in my book to see a movie and all the people making the horrible P&S transfers should be shot

since I got an hdtv, I find I like movies a lot better that are 1.85 to 1 vs 2.35 to 1!
