I'd get a Syntax 30" LCD. Personally, I can't wait to ditch my 32" CRT for an LCD. I'm planning on getting a 37" Syntax or BenQ later this year.

Nope, LCD is beautiful. I have a 32" Westinghouse LCD that I picked up at Best Buy for !$1500. Crystal clear picture, plug 'n play with my HTPC, and to answer your question, its viewable from all reasonable angles with equal clarity.

Why? This is 2005. Most items are made somewhere in Asia. Most American companies of old, like Zenith, Westinghouse, or RCA are simply marketing shells that buy and rebadge products from these firms.

Besides, google Sceptre... they've been around a long time.

Check out Westinghouse also. The guys at avsforum.com have been saying that the Westinghouse 32" has better PQ than the Syntax. Plus, you can get it at Best Buy and get good financing.

Sony quality really has fallen off over the past few years. I would strongly recommend against buying Sony tv's.

Costco has a 53" Akai (supposedly Samsung rebadges) for $999. I got a 47" for the same price last year and it is pretty good for the money.

Good to know. The 1080p BenQ at Crutchfield for $2k has me intrigued...waiting for some reviews though.
 
sam's club has some 45-56" projection HDTV's for 1000-1300 .. a little over your price range, but they're nice TV's.

my parents picked up an Akai (rebadged Samsung, IIRC) 54" HDTV for $990 about a year ago.

😕 You haven't been shopping for TV's lately, have you. LCD's have come to equal plasma screen in image quality (they got rid of the "screen door" effect in modern ones), they're not as fragile, they last longer, and you don't need to call in a construction crew to get one mounted to the wall. LCD viewing angles have also been increased to 160 degrees.

What you say is true, LCD's have indeed improved quite a bit in recent times. However IMHO, the Sony and most other HD CRT sets still blow away any LCD as far as picture quality goes. And the price cannot be beat.

If you got the room, and don't mind the size/bulk of the CRT's, this 30" (and also the 34"'s) are the way to go.

A CRT won't fit hanging above my mantle 🙂 I'll sacrifice a touch of screen quality for an extra 3 cubic feet of usable space in the room.
 
Have you checked out what the guys over to AVSforum.com recommend? For 16:9 WS HDTV, I'd not buy anything less than 32", 'cause that's already small compared to regular 4:3 FS TV.
 
Don't get me wrong, CRTs have a good 50+ years of experience on technologies like plasma and LCD. CRT picture quality should be second to none. However, plasma and LCDs aren't that bad, especially consider the overall footprint in comparions to former. I'll take my Dell's 15 pounds any day of the week compared to a 100+ pound monster.

If you do go with a fixed-resolution display (like plasma and LCD), please be sure to know what the native resolution is. 720p broadcasts (ESPN, Fox, and ABC only) are 1280x720. Everybody else in the HD game uses 1080i, which is 1920x1080. If your display doesn't natively support 1920x1080, it will have to shrink the incoming signal to fit it on the screen. Some folks are willing to live with that. But, if I am going to go HD, I don't want my display to show fewer details than what's provided. I'd rather UPconvert 720p than DOWNconvert 1080i. By the way, LCDs are progressive displays by nature. They will convert interlaced signals to a progressive display.

To my knowledge, the Dell 2405 is the cheapest 1920x1200 display anywhere. Unless you are running a movie hall, 24" will do just fine. Besides, you can use it as the second display later when you get the unit you really want (Aqous 45" for me ... if not Qualia 005 🙂).

Oh yeah, I mounted my 2405FPW to the wall this weekend. Had I taken wood shop back in school, the little entertainment center I attempted to build would still be standing, just under the display. And I'd even have photos of it. :/
