HDTV Connosieurs chime in: I've been looking at these two... looking to spend between ~2000-2500, for an HDTV for my HTPC/HD Cable/DVD Player, etc. give me ur opinions!

I personally prefer DLP (really CRT first), then Plasma and then LCD. I just don't like the LCD TV's. That said, the Grand VVegas are nice TV's.

Have you spent any time at the HT sites? I always recommend people read some posts about the TV they're planning to purchase just so you know the pros and cons up front.

My advice is not to get a Sony.

I will opt for a Samsung DLP but it looks like you are trying to go with a low space design. The DLPs are not that much bigger but of course they have a base so you can not fit components underneth the TV.

For that price, go with the Samsung HLP series.

Here's mine.

I'm sure you can find the 50" one (the one i have) for about $2500 or less now a days. trust me, you will NOT regret it.

and IMO, DLP > LCD > Plasma

I'm a big fan of Sony CRT's, if you're not going with a CRT I'd probably look elsewhere.

I would be particularly concerned about the red push mentioned on one of the two.

While I would consider professional calibration an essential on any high end TV you should at least be able to do a half decent job yourself.

on the newer TV's (DLP and LCD) professional calibration is not necessary by any means to get the most out of your TV. however, if you go with an old school CRT RPTV then it will make night/day difference. but from the looks of the OP, i don't think he's going for CRT RPTV.

Yah other than DLP, LCD is next, as plasma has like 5,000 to 10,000 hour burnout thing.

I warned my sister and her husband not to get a Sony but they did. Just this weekend, she told me her Grand Wega LCD RPTV blew out. :roll:

Anything BUT Sony if you wanna go HDTV.

Trust me on that,

Get Samsung>Toshiba>Panasonic> before touching Sony.

Sony are IMO King of trinitron television yeah, but when it come to projection,dlp,lcd television, they just stinks.

DLP & LCD RP sets have their own issues, while they are obviously not affected by some CRT specific issues they definitely benefit from calibration.

If anything they are more likely to need professional calibration since the average end user is much less likely to be able to calibrate them correctly.

are you kidding me?

the bulb is rated at 8000 hours... (well over 3 years under normal circumstances) and is easy to replace... and at least it is replacable... should your plasma start to fade, get burn in, or go dim... you're screwed.

and the 50" samsung weighs less than 75 pounds... it's just as easy to manage as my parents 42" plasma.

actually its 77lbs ... thats what it said in my manual :p.

my mom was shocked at how easy it was for my bro and I to carry that thing in the house and the size of it. if it wasn't so big, you could easily lift it by yourself.

3 year old Samsung direct view CRT died almost on it's 3rd bday. $500 to fix.
Bought a SONY 32" HD direct view and love it.

Sony owns the Direct view CRT (big old glass Tv's). Make the best far and away.

I would probably not by a Sony DLP or LCD to be honest tho.

LCD would have to go to SHarp as the best and Sammy does make a really nice DLP set.
