HDTV cable woes

EDIT 12/27/06 - Good job Time Warner. I called my local TWC office (the one about 2 miles down the road) yesterday, but they always redirect me to a central office. I asked why I wasn't getting ESPN2-HD or FSN-HD and they tired doing something to the box and the channels still didn't come up. Their solution -- get a new box. Since my current box only has component output, I asked if they would have any with HDMI. The guy said "yes" and even pulled up the specs of an HDMI box and read them out to me.

So I go to the TWC office today and tell them I need to exchange the box for an HDMI box. Their response -- "We don't carry HDMI boxes. We won't for another month." I tell them my problems with ESPN2-HD & FSN-HD. Their response -- "We don't carry those channels in this area." I find that to be weird, especially since I don't live in a rural area (Pasadena -- ever heard of the Rose Bowl?)

Now I have 3 component devices (cable box, DVD player, and my neighbor's Wii - he brings it over so we can play on a bigger screen) and only two component inputs. :frown:

At least my monoprice shipment came in today -- but the VGA cables I ordered have two pins missing. :frown:

EDIT 12/23/06 - Is there any place besides monoprice which I should check out? I just need some quality HDMI, HDMI-DVI, Component, and VGA-VGA cables (6 ft, except for VGA, I need 10 ft for that).

OP: We bought a brand-new HDTV on Sunday and the store is delivering it today. For some reason, I thought that the cables (at least component, if not HDMI) would be included with the TV, but when I look at the online product manual, I see no mention of them. Worse off, I called the cable company last night to order a new HDTV box and all they supply is the power cord and remote. :frown: Plus when I asked the Time Warner rep about the outputs on the back of the cable box, he sounded like he didn't know what he was talking about, so I don't know if I'll have HDMI, component, or both on the back of the box ...

How fast can monoprice ship cables? I want my HDTV now! (But I don't want to head on over to Best Buy and pay $150 for cables) 😛

TV we got
Samsung 52" 1080P LCD

*sigh* You'd think that for the price of the TV, they'd include something. I guess I'll have to take off the Silver Sensor from my PC's HDTV PCI card and put it on the TV for a few days ...

Here in NY Time Warner supplies component cables with their HD boxes. An HDMI port is available on the HD DVR box that I have (Scientific Atlanta 8300HD), but I had to supply my own HDMI cable.

My TV didn't come with cables but all the boxes I have gotten to hook up to it came with component cables. Both Comcast and DirecTV provided them with their boxes.

TimeWarner should include some component cables with the HD-box. Those will work just fine for all your HD viewing pleasures. 🙂

IIRC next day shipping in CA is $7.50

RadioShack, Wally World, et al carry the basic cables so long as you don't need anything extraordinary (like a 15' DVI->HDMI cable). For the digital cables, quality isn't as important as for the analog ones. I bought a 10' DVI cable for <$15 from RS that works about the same as the one that came with my LCD monitor. It was a Hot Deal (possibly posted by the Grand Nagus) at the time, but they have any number of decently priced cables. Worst case, buy some cheapo cables until you get the better quality ones.

How are you running SD into the set? If possible, try the S-Video input as it seems preferred for SD onto an HDTV (again, with the qualification you're not running filters through a tuner card).

It's a (3 days before) Christmas miracle! When I went to the cable office today, the lady brought out just the box, power cord, remote, and coaxial cables and I told her that I didn't have any HDTV cables, so she went to the back and gave me some component ones free of charge! And as of now, there's no use for HDMI since my box doesn't have it ...

Now just have to wait for the home theater store to deliver the TV. I'm salivating like Pavlov's dog 😛 ...

If they're the white component cables that some cable providers give out, ditch them ASAP for something halfway decent.

Yeah, I'm going to do that later on, but I just needed some sort of component cables for right now. Once I've gotten the TV set up, I'll know what length to get my cables in.

you wont get them if you order online by Xmas...maybe go component if you have those and change to HDMI when they arrive

Unfortunate, the HDMI is better than component.

Which is why I'll give a call to TW and ask if I can exchange the box. I'll just make up some lie that my component inputs are taken by other devices (which they will be, once I get a Wii 😛)

Bump, Edit in OP

In addition to Monoprice, I also go to Cablesforless, PartsExpress, and BlueJeansCable

I ended up ordering from Monoprice. They have a faster delivery for people in SoCal. Maybe I'll get them today!
