Planning to buy this Antenna, fix it next to the Direct TV dish (maybe just replace it) and use the existing coax network. Will it work? any thoughts/suggestions/recommendations?

Check tvfool.com to see what type of antenna you need based on your location.

If you're antsy and just want to try it out, go down to radio shack (or whatever it's called now) and buy some rabbit ears. Spend no more than $10. If you're near a major city, you'll get the main stations.

From what I have read, it is a decent enough antenna, but it is designed mainly for UHF reception. Depending on your location, you may have some VHF stations in your area. I live in Houston, and three of my major local networks broadcast on VHF (CBS, ABC, and PBS). For my area, a VHF/UHF combo gave me much better results.

I have a UHF/VHF GE attic mount antenna from Walmart, and it works really well. I am able to pick up Fox, ABC, NBC, CBS, The CW, and a couple of different PBS stations.

I just hung it from one of the nails on a rafter not hammered all the way in.

So what is a good UHF/VHF combo antenna?

If I put it in attic, I will have to run cables, I was planning to install it next to the dish and hook it up to the existing home coax network, will it work, any thoughts?

I get local channels on DirecTV, so I never considered getting an antenna. I just upgraded my service, got the Genie and 3 Minis.....I've been impressed with the Genie so far.

This is why people missing out on CBS due to Time Warner are stupid.

I mean I have the dish installed on my roof but I am not subscribed any more, no more cable for me. Trying to get the local free channels.

No such thing as an "HDTV" antenna. TV is broadcast in VHF and UHF - you can pick these up with tin foil. Coax is the easiest delivery to a TV from said tin foil.

Yup. "HD" antennas are just marketing. I have an old school ladder frame antenna in my attic, the type you used to see on rooftops all the time. I'm about 25 miles from downtown DC and I get about 2 dozen stations over the air. Works great, picture is always good.
