I'm getting a KR7 and looking at 40G Maxtor 7200rpm. What is the highest any of you have this drive, or know from experience of a good/better drive for that works over 170 or higher?

I'm running at FSB 188 right now ( 188 * 8.5 ) using 1/5 divider. I've had it up to 195 FSB at 1/5, but run at 188, its about the limit for cas2 on this Kingmax.

170MHz FSB?
Your going to be running on a 42.5MHz PCI/IDE bus which is most definitely beyond the capabilities of most Hard Drives.
Unless you've got the resources to be able to hand test the HDD ahead of time to ensure that it operates reliably on a 42.5MHz PCI bus speed I would be extremely tentaive about running it at that.

Generally PCI bus speed above 38MHz arent recommended, and 40MHz or so is the point at which most devices start experiencing trouble.
I had to test a good 6 drives before I found one that would operate reliably in my system... granted I am running a PCI bus slightly above what yours would be operating at. I imagine the average person doesnt have the resources to have access to multiple HDD's to test to ensure operability at such a speed.

If it eases your mind somewhat, the drive I did settle on was a Maxtor D740X, 40GB 7200 RPM... which looks to be the same drive your looking into. I still wouldnt recommend purchasing the drive unless you know for a fact a head of time that it will cope with such a PCI bus speed though.
