First I was having a problem with the IDE zip 100 which was the slave to the HD on the primary channel. Random lock up on insertion of a zip disk and lock up on write. I figured it's the 'ole zip drive VIA 686B problem. I bought a ATA 66 card to run the zip but before that I decided to put the IDE Zip100 as secondary slave to the Teac burner and move the Toshiba 16x DVD Rom to Primary slave to the WD HD.
So...
Secondary Master-Teac burner
Secondary slave-ZIP 100

Primary Master- WD 20 gig ATA66
Primary Slave- Toshiba 16X DVD ROM

----

To make a long story short. I pop a CD into the DVD and the system locks up. Seems that HD doesn't like a ZIP or a DVD as a slave.

Is this thing picking on me or doesn't the HD like a slaved DVD? Or Zip...

Seems I read somewhere that HDs don't like to have a DVD as a slave?????

Whatssup with that?

BTW, The zip drive seems to work fine as the Secondary slave where as it didn't work well as the slave to the HD...just like the DVD.

I did change to a 24" cable on the Primary (HD\DVD) channel.
WD recommends only a 18"...could that be a problem?

Thanks, Mac

I don't know how much this will help you but on my Intel-based (BX chpset and Pentium 3) machine my DVD is slave to the HD on primary IDE and my zip is slave to the HD on secondary IDE and it all works fine. Previously the zip was slave on the primary IDE w/o ill effects.
