I have all of the following games installed and do play them all often. I jumped on the wagon listening to people tell me about the "much" better features of the 6XXX series cards. I originally had a Flashed to XT x800 pro( for 3 months) that I swapped out for a 6800GT(Ive had for about 2 months). See my findings
Far Cry
Okay, I didnt know how to enable the HDR until now in Far Cry. After messing around with it for a little bit I have come to a couple of conclusions. I would never trade HDR for AA. HDR comes with such a performance hit at 1280x1024 that its almost un playable on my rig(see sig..... 6800 gt). I was in the 30 fps range during more than a few scenes. I do admit If I could use HDR and AA at atleast 50-60 fps It would be a great feature. Until that becomes possible I would never recommend using HDR.
Chronicles of Riddick
I recently got this game and was very excited about using the Geforce 6xxx only setting, I think it's called 2.0++ or something. That was until I realized that an average of 30 fps was the actual gaming experience I was going to get when using that mode. What good is this setting on todays cards?
Doom 3
THis Game does perform better with the 6800GT, but doesn't look any better or worse than with an equivlent Ati card, and honestly If I didnt have the FPS counter on I'd tell you they played nearly identical.
Halflife 2
Same outcome as my Doom 3 findings but with The X800 being the better performer
Painkiller
Seems to be a little too glowy with the 6800gt but looks nice on either card. Neither is the winner overall
Im glad I got to try out the 6800GT, and what a great card it is, but how is this card more future proof than an x800 series card? The way I see it is that it lets you see how things are going to start looking but thats it. Unless you like playing slide shows, Most of the 6800 features are for screen shots only. From this point out I'm going to *disagree* with anyone for telling others that a 6800 GT/ultra is a better card than a x800/850. I here by officially recommend both of the top offerings by ATI and Nvidia, because they are both great, and neither offer anything better than the other. If you still can't decide, the only question is: Do you play Halflife 2 or Doom 3? And even then it doesnt really matter. Pick one
