HDR Monitors coming!

So I read the AT front page thing about AMD and high dynamic range LCD panels, higher bandwidth ports and stuff that will make for some sexy monitor tech next year hopefully. 3440x1440, 10bit, HDR, 144hz, BRING IT...or 4K, 8 bit, 120hz. Still nice, but laggy as hell for the next 10 years.

Unfortunately it says 2016Q4, progress is way too slow. I was hoping on a new display with dp 1.3 + new video card in Q2.

Yeah looks like it will be around Skylake-E time. End of next year is going to be a badass upgrade time I suspect. These monitors sound amazing. Uniform backlighting should be a given with local luminance control. I WANT.

4k 120hz? Do we even have connectivity that can handle that kind of bandwidth yet?

Display Port 1.3 is mentioned. I'm not sure what that supports though.
Edit:

Edit2: I'm so HAPPY to be stuck at 4K HDR 60 HZ!!!!!!

Ya, not even remotely excited about this. Choosing between 4K 60Hz HDR and 120 Hz SDR will be the most infuriating thing ever for me 🙁. They need to stop targeting 60 hz as the starting point.

I'm expecting Broadwell-E mid-2016 or so, and I'd be shocked if Skylake-E was available in Q4 2016.

@PrincessFrosty: Display Port 1.3 will support 4k 120Hz (SDR) but only 60Hz (HDR).

What if it's just a bandwidth issue?

HDR is something I can't wait to see.

Between 4k, HDR, high refresh rates, adaptive sync, VR headsets, and OLED actually getting close, there has never been a more exciting time for display tech, IMO

Can we combine them though? HDR, 4K, High Refresh Rates, Adaptive Sync and OLED?

I just got slightly aroused thinking about it. And yes, a VR version of that would be nice too!

Mmm..... if only.....

Can it be combined? For certain. Can it be combined for less than $20,000.00 per monitor? Not certain. Also, regarding bandwidth and having to choose between HDR and 120hz, yeah that would be frustrating for a 4K user. Hopefully you can change it in display settings. I think you'd be able to just change color depth from 10 bit down to the normal 8 bit and you'd then get your 120hz.
It looks like they doubled the bandwidth with the new display port but used a good amount of that for the richer colors of HDR. Personally, I would be interested in a 3440x1440 HDR model. I don't think 4K will be the right res for me in the next few years. I just can't imagine getting high FPS in 4K for a very long time unless lowering settings down quite a lot. 4K HDR would be so sexy for many things though...

I'm skeptical that they will be any good. HDR needs a high (really high) contrast ratio to strut its stuff, which means FALD or OLED. PC monitors are notorious for garbage contrast ratio's. A monitor with FALD would be awesome, but it would need thousands of zones to not be obvious. TV's can get away with a few hundred because of the viewing distances.

Here's hoping that the first HDR monitor means the first OLED monitor.

There is no such thing as a 1440p 40-55 inch monitor so for me, 1440p isn't even an option.

But I'll see how 1080p 120hz works when I get my first 4K monitor early next year and see how much I'm missing on the refresh rate side.

Unless these HDR displays are FALD (never seen it used before in a PC monitor before) or OLED, I don't think they're worth getting excited over. Hard to do proper HDR on an edge lit display as you don't have precise control over the pixels.

Aren't these monitors going to be outrageously expensive though?
