I am trying to use a HDMI cable from my laptop to my HDTV, the problem is when I connect it through HDMI I have to try and scale the image. Nvidias control panel sucks and wont scale it properly, it leaves the edges cut off. I know my friend also has a samsung hdtv and he was able to do an auto adjustment which automatically scaled the image to the appropriate size on his tv. However, on my tv the audio adjustment and screen settings are both greyed out when using HDMI. The vga cable automatically set the 1080p display to fit the screen and it looks great but I have to get a separate audio cable for it. If I can get HDMI to work it would be less hectic and take up less room.

Do you have a setting in your TV where you can set each input to a "PC" mode or something similar? The VGA input is automatically in PC mode so it works fine, if you can set the HMDI to PC mode too then it should work fine.

I had the same problem with my Sony TV, but it has that setting and once I did that, everything worked out fine.

The cut off edges in HDMI is due to the standard practices of the consumer electronics association. Timing information is contained just outside the content area and to insure this isn't revealed, even partially, about 5% of the area is cropped out.

VGA doesn't come out of the CEA world and thus expects to show 100%. The interesting thing is that on my old Vizio plasma HDTV I can undo this cropping on HDMI (doesn't exist on DVI, VGA), but on my Samsung and Panasonic HDTVs I cannot undo the cropping on HDMI transport.

There may also be a default HDMI port the TV expects for Computer input. I have 2 Samsung HDTV's and they are just fine. You can usually also adjust the edges of the picture to match up with the TV to keep it from cutting it off. Modern HDTV's have a lot of different settings.

Usually there is a aspect setting and will need to be on dot to dot if at 1080p, otherwise it will need to be 'stretch' or zoom.

I know there's the possibility to adjust the "overscan" in ATI Catalyst... doesn't nVidia have something similar?

I had a similar problem on my samsung OP, but I finally found the setting which scaled it properly. I'll look at what it's set up to when I get home.

On my panasonic, the correct aspect setting for proper pixel mapping from a PC is called "FULL". On my AMD graphics card, the scaling slider has to be all the way to the right to fill the screen at that setting.
