Looks like audio is golden with HDMI from HTPC to Older HDMI 1.2 AVR, but the old AVR doesn't seem to support higher than 1080i video rates, and eventually at least I will be using a good, but not top line 65" or better display.

HTPC -> AVR -> Display doesn't sound like it will pass best video.

HTPC -> Display -> AVR, will that require the display to be on to pass the audio to the AVR?

Or do I need to look at some kind of HDMI splitter box with outputs to Display and AVR?

Side note, any ancient Svideo etc inputs would go to the AVR which upconverts to HDMI as well as outputs to various analog outs, but I should have a few input options on the display to manage switching input sources with or without going through the AVR?

Perhaps some magic HDMI splitter box with several inputs?

HDMI 1.2 should support up to 1920 x 1200 @60hz, so 1080p should be no problem.

Have you already tried it and are having problems getting the display to run at 1080p, or are you just expecting it to have issues?

Its a known issue with this model, but it sounds like some kind of splitter box might work.

Its an old as in 7+ years receiver that I have been thinking about for a couple years, but are just now starting to be sold off at prices my budget is ok with. A main factor is reduced compatibility with newer formats. People who buy $2k receivers don't want to mess around with external boxes to make it work, or run 1080i instead of P.
