If I can get the resolution out of all the ports and security is not an issue (rip my DVD/Blu rays), is there any benefit from a certain port?

DVI-D can't transmit audio for built-in speakers, and is a thicker cable, and can't transmit as far as a high quality HDMI or DP. DVI-D (dual link) is also limited to 2560 x 1600 resolution, can't do 4K or above. Max res. (@ target refresh rate and chroma subsampling) HDMI or DP can do, is a matter of bandwidth, depends on the revision.

I'd sooner start the other way around, pick what monitor you want and see what it needs, or what video output you have available and pick a monitor that supports it. DP input monitors tend to cost more, but more due to their other desirable attributes than which input it has... except it could just be an older model, surpassed by a newer one with HDMI.

HDMI is the most universal, considering it comes on more video sources, new monitors, and most TVs.

So at this point in the game DP & HDMI are pretty close less the security on HDMI?

It's just an opinion. If a monitor comes with DP. That usually if not always means the other components are higher quality. All 144hz monitors seem to come with display port. If you look at budget monitors. They usually come with HDMI and sometimes DVI and even VGA connections.

I do not personally think that DP is better or worse than HDMI. From my experience a monitor equipped with DP has better guts inside.

A hypothesis that definitely makes sense!

Easier to link an article. ;)

Good article. I'm looking at replacing my 12 year old Dell 24" TN panel. Most specs list different refresh rates for HDMI and Display port...DP being the faster of the two.

DP being the faster of the two.
That's mainly because DP 1.3/1.4 are 26Gbps but HDMI 2.0 is 14Gbps. Even the older DP 1.2 is 17Gbps.

So unless the monitor has HDMI 2.1 (reserved for only the newest and highest end monitors and GPUs, but offers ~42gbps), DP basically always has more available bandwidth than the HDMI ports.

1440p 144hz SDR is ~14Gbps so HDMI 2.0 can just barely handle it, but step it up to 1440p 144hz HDR and you need over 17Gbps which can be achieved with DP 1.3/1.4 for MUCH cheaper than HDMI 2.1, not to mention there are GPUs going back several years that support DP1.3/1.4, but HDMI 2.1 is relegated to only the newest GPUs.

So a lot of gaming monitors that can go up to 165hz or 175hz 1440p tend to lock HDMI to 1440p 144hz, but allow 165hz or higher when using Displayport.

The main thing is, what are your current, and future needs. I don't need 120Hz 4K, am fine with HDMI2.0 for a few more years. DP for me would be like using a Ferrari to get groceries, and I'd need an adapter for the 4K TV monitors I have.

Display Port is not something you need. It's something you want to look for when buying any monitor. If you look at the high end graphics cards 3070 type cards. They all have 3 Display Ports and a HDMI ports.

HDMI: Audio and video signal, best for TV to PC connections.
DVI: Video only, perfect for older systems or for 144Hz at 1080p.
DisplayPort: The best connector for an audio and video signal, and can transmit 144Hz up to 4K.
VGA: Old, legacy video connector.
