hdmi->vga adapter advice needed

I need to get a HDMI to VGA adapter. I just need XGA resolution. Should I buy a specific brand or are the generic ones good for this as well? Locally I can only find no-brand ones, but there are two types: with a 5v power input and with no power. Is there a difference between the two types? I mean isn't the power pin from the HDMI enough for powering the VGA cable? Or does separate 5V power to boost the signal actually help? I've seen that Startech has a hdmi to vga adapter as well and it doesn't use separate power, so this makes we wonder whether the powered ones do anything or are just old models with inefficient converters inside them needing more power to function than the newer ones.

I've had okay success with analog ones on my NUC/BRIX mini computers, but they're definitely not perfect - picture is sometimes sketchy. So you want to take an HDMI signal and convert it into a VGA signal? What is the source?
