HDMI TV detection issues

I have a windows 7 ultimate home server with an i3 530 (rest of specs are in sig), im using the onboard graphics to play movies onto an older 37 inch 720p TV using an HDMI cable.

Thing is the TV must be swiched on first before the server or it will not be detected, so if i forget then i have to reboot the server with the TV on so it will be detected. Any way around this? If not then where exactly does the problem lie? Is it a windows issue or is it the TV or is it the HD graphics on the i3?

EDIT: Never mind, the issue is XBMC displaying a blank screen for some reason. The TV is detected even if its not switched on first, its lacking a decent "no signal" indicator because its a bit dated. Guess ill have to toy with the XBMC settings a bit.

Hmm. I'm running an i5 with onboard video for my HTPC and am not having any trouble with detection. I run my HDMI through a receiver but that gets turned off when the TV isn't on.

Does your server stay on or do you power it off? I could see it possibly not detecting if you powered on the server with the TV being off. I assume though that you're just leaving it on?

I've been battling an issue similar to this ever since I've built my htpc. Every now and then I would lose all surround sound decoding and only have 2 channels. I would have to restart the htpc to reenable 8 channels. I've pretty much given up on trying to resolve it though.

That's interesting jtvang. Not to sidetrack the thread, but I had lots off issues with my HTPC (using Media Center in Win7) until I told windows I had a stereo speaker setup (both in control panel and in WMC). After doing that everything is bitstreamed (is that even a word?) properly to my receiver with zero issues.

I did this after coming across a post in forum stating that you need to set a stereo speaker system to get windows to bitstream properly. I have no clue if its true but it worked for me.

Glad you got it worked out but for those who want to know here is a few tips about HDMI.

HDMI requires the host device power an eeprom in the target device. So when you connect an HDMI cable between a player and a display the display can even be unplugged and the hdmi device has the ability to detect its presence. There was a thread on here about redmere cables tapping into that supply for other uses and that is the reason I didn't like the idea, that power is there for a specific purpose.

I guess that would explain why my Harmony turns on the TV before it turns on the receiver. Still doesn't explain why the computer is fine even though its always on though.
