hdmi to svideo adapter

is there a hdmi cable that goes to svideo? the new laptop i have has a hdmi slot and i want to hook it up to my regular tv

UM, there is a DVI to component adapter, HDMI>DVI>Component> um don't know.

If it does exist, it's going to be fairly expensive as it requires a D/A conversion.

It's not an adapter, or converter, in the sense that it takes a dvi signal and changes it to component output. The actual creation of the component signals is done on the video card, then passed through the adapter. In other words, that adapter only works with specific models of ATI video cards, and does not work with any other hardware.


I'd think the only way right now to do dvi to s-video is if you had an hdmi a/v receiver that supports s-video outputs, then the signal conversion is performed in the receiver's internal hardware.

HDMI contains only the digital signal, so HDMI -> DVI means you still only have the Digital DVI signal (single link). Tossing on a DVI -> RGB (component or VGA) would effectively remove the signal completely leaving nothing.


OP You need a TV with HDMI or a DVI monitor to connect your HDMI port.

which laptop? some have composite port built in. Check for a yellow RCA jack.

Heck, quite a few of them have s-video these days. If it's a relatively modern laptop, just look carefully.

Newer laptops will usually have mini-DIN ports that look like S-video but support component video, S-video AND composite video through extra pins. Just line on newer video cards.

You can get a HDMI to VGA adapter, and then a VGA to s-video adapter.

as I said before, this wont work. hdmi has no analog signals in the cable, so an HDMI -> VGA cable would strip all signals.

You can get something that will do it, but it will be very expensive. It will not be a simple adapter, but the products are out there.

If you really want to hook your laptop up to your TV, I'd think about getting a new TV before spending big bucks on converters that would take your nice HDMI output and then convert it twice down to a POS 480i s-video signal.

Thank you, I was looking at Gefen products, I'm suprised how much they charge for analog to analog converters considering all they do is change the signal's degree.
Composite is sent 120 degrees from each other on one line
S-video is sent with one wire sending Y, and one wire sending Y-B, Y-R, at 180 degrees from each other, and component is each signal on it's own line.
